Chapter 2: The House Finally Became Quiet

Chapter 2: The House Finally Became Quiet

Patricia stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen.

"You wouldn't dare."

Mason closed his laptop.

"I already did."

His attorney had confirmed receipt of every document.

Joint financial authorizations were revoked.

Property access codes were scheduled to change within the hour.

The family business no longer allowed Patricia to approve transactions using Mason's authority.

Brianna snatched up her phone.

"Dad will fix this."

Mason looked at her calmly.

"No."

"He already knows."

Earlier that afternoon, while driving home, Mason had received a call from his father asking how Lena and Oliver were doing.

Mason had answered honestly.

The silence on the other end of the line had spoken louder than words.

Now another car pulled into the driveway.

The front door opened.

Richard, Mason's father, stepped inside.

His eyes moved slowly across the room.

The burned saucepan.

The overflowing trash.

Lena struggling to remain on her feet.

Oliver burning with fever in Mason's arms.

Then Patricia.

"What happened here?"

Patricia rushed toward him.

"Your son is throwing us out over a misunderstanding."

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked to Lena.

"You should be in bed."

Lena lowered her eyes.

"I didn't want anyone to go hungry."

Richard closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Then he turned toward his wife.

"You came here to help."

Patricia said nothing.

"You failed."

Those two words carried more disappointment than anger ever could.

No one argued after that.

Within twenty minutes, Patricia and Brianna quietly carried their luggage out of the house.

The door closed behind them.

For the first time in weeks, the home felt peaceful.
