Chapter 8 — The Enemy Inside the Family

The Woman They Thought They Could Break

Chapter 8 — The Enemy Inside the Family

Evelyn Hart had spent her entire life believing enemies were easy to recognize.

They were the people who hated you.

The people who attacked you.

The people who openly wished for your failure.

But the older she became, the more she realized something far more dangerous.

The most painful betrayals rarely came from strangers.

They came from people who knew exactly where your heart was.

The message from her mother remained on her desk.

Trust no one who tells you they are protecting you.

Evelyn had read the sentence hundreds of times.

Each time, it felt different.

At first, it frightened her.

Then it angered her.

Because everyone in her life had used those words.

Protecting you.

A phrase that sounded loving.

A phrase that had hidden so many secrets.

Her father.

Her husband.

Her husband's family.

Everyone claimed they were protecting her.

But protection without honesty was another form of control.

And Evelyn was tired of being controlled.

The next morning, she walked into Richard Hart's office.

He knew immediately why she was there.

"You found something else."

She placed the necklace on his desk.

"Mom left me a message."

Richard's expression changed.

"What message?"

She watched him carefully.

"That I should not trust anyone who says they are protecting me."

Silence.

A long silence.

Richard looked away.

And that was the moment Evelyn noticed.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Pain.

"Why did that hurt you?"

Richard didn't answer.

"Dad."

He sighed.

"Because she said something similar to me before she died."

Evelyn froze.

"What?"

Richard walked toward the window.

"Your mother knew something was wrong."

"With who?"

He looked back.

"Someone inside our family."

The words felt heavier than anything else.

Inside our family.

Not a stranger.

Not a competitor.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

"Who?"

Richard hesitated.

And Evelyn hated that hesitation.

Because she had seen it too many times.

The pause before a truth was hidden.

"I need you to understand something."

She shook her head.

"No."

Richard stopped.

"Not this time."

Her voice remained calm.

"But every time I ask a question, everyone tells me they need to protect me."

A pause.

"And every time, I discover the truth was worse."

Richard looked at his daughter.

The little girl he had once carried in his arms.

The woman standing before him now was different.

She was no longer asking for permission.

She was demanding honesty.

"Your mother suspected Victor Whitmore."

Evelyn stared.

"Adrian's father?"

Richard nodded.

"But she never had proof."

"Why would he hurt her?"

"Money."

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

"Power."

Richard opened another file.

Inside were copies of old financial records.

"Before I built Hart Global, Victor and I were partners."

"I know."

"No."

Richard looked serious.

"You know the public story."

He placed the documents down.

"The truth is different."

Evelyn read.

Years ago, Richard and Victor created a company together.

At first, they were equal partners.

Then Elena discovered something.

Money was being moved.

Accounts were hidden.

Investments were manipulated.

"Victor was stealing?"

Richard nodded.

"Your mother found out."

"What did she do?"

"She confronted him."

Evelyn felt a chill.

"And then?"

Richard looked at the floor.

"Then she died."

The room became silent.

"No."

The word escaped Evelyn before she could stop it.

Not because she didn't believe him.

Because she did.

And that was worse.

Richard continued.

"I never proved he caused the accident."

"But you suspected."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His face broke slightly.

"Because I was afraid."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Of Victor?"

Richard shook his head.

"Of losing you."

She didn't answer.

Because she understood.

Fear had controlled everyone.

Richard hid things because he feared losing his daughter.

Adrian stayed silent because he feared losing his family.

And the Whitmores attacked because they feared losing power.

Fear had become the reason everyone destroyed the people they loved.

Later that afternoon, Evelyn met Adrian.

This time, she did not go because she missed him.

She went because she needed information.

They sat in a quiet café away from cameras.

Adrian looked different.

Less confident.

More human.

"I know about your father."

Evelyn watched him.

"How much?"

"Enough to know he has been hiding something."

Adrian placed a folder on the table.

"I searched old company records."

Evelyn opened it.

Inside were documents from twenty-five years ago.

Her mother's name appeared.

Victor's name appeared.

And another name.

She stopped.

"Who is this?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Someone you haven't met."

"Who?"

"My grandfather's lawyer."

Evelyn frowned.

"Why does that matter?"

"Because he was the person who changed the inheritance documents after your mother's death."

Her heart stopped.

"The missing page."

Adrian nodded.

"The final page of the trust."

Evelyn stared at the papers.

Someone had removed the final condition.

Someone had hidden part of her mother's last wishes.

"Who had access?"

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

"Only family."

The answer was obvious.

But impossible.

That evening, Evelyn returned to Richard's house.

She found him in the library.

"Dad."

He looked up.

Her expression told him everything.

"What happened?"

She placed the documents on the table.

"I know someone changed Mom's inheritance."

Richard went completely still.

"You knew?"

The question was quiet.

But painful.

Richard didn't answer.

Evelyn's heart sank.

"Dad."

"I suspected."

"Suspected who?"

He looked at her.

And finally said the name.

"Your grandmother."

Evelyn stepped back.

"My grandmother?"

Richard nodded.

"She believed your mother had too much influence over me."

"And she changed the documents?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Richard's voice was barely audible.

"Because she didn't believe you deserved the inheritance."

Evelyn laughed softly.

A broken sound.

"Because I was a woman?"

Richard nodded.

"Because she believed power belonged to men."

The pieces began connecting.

The missing page.

The hidden inheritance.

The attacks.

The secrets.

Everything led back to one thing.

Control.

But then Evelyn noticed something.

"Dad."

"What?"

"How did Daniel Cross know about the inheritance?"

Richard's expression changed.

Because that was the question he had been avoiding.

Slowly, he answered:

"Because someone inside my family told him."

Evelyn felt the room disappear around her.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who knew everything.

That night, she received another message.

Unknown number.

A photograph was attached.

It showed Richard Hart meeting someone secretly.

Someone Evelyn recognized immediately.

Her heart dropped.

Because the person standing beside her father...

Was Adrian's mother.

Margaret Whitmore.

The message underneath was simple.

The enemy has always been inside the family.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

For years, she thought the Whitmores hated her because she was not rich enough.

She was wrong.

They hated her because they knew something she didn't.

She was never just Adrian's wife.

She was the heir to a fortune.

And now...

May you like

Everyone who wanted that fortune had a reason to destroy her.
