The officer stopped the recording.
He looked directly at Meredith.
"Would you like to explain that statement?"
She swallowed.
"I..."
"I was angry."
"I didn't mean—"
"You didn't mean what?"
The officer's voice remained calm.
Daniel stared at his sister as though seeing her for the first time.
"You pushed her..."
Meredith looked desperately toward her mother.
"Evelyn..."
"Tell them."
Evelyn stood slowly.
"It was Christmas."
"Everyone was emotional."
"Can't we settle this privately?"
The detective shook his head.
"An intentional assault causing serious burns isn't a private family disagreement."
Charles finally spoke.
His voice was barely audible.
"I saw her do it."
Everyone turned toward him.
"I didn't stop her."
"I should have."
