Chapter 2: Everything Falls Apart

Chapter 2: Everything Falls Apart
The detectives entered only minutes later.
I had contacted Colorado authorities before boarding the flight.
Two uniformed officers approached the table.
"Julian Vance?"
"Serena Collins Vance?"
"We need you to come with us."
Serena immediately pointed at me.
"She's trying to destroy our family!"
I answered quietly,
"No."
"I'm trying to save a child."
One investigator opened the fundraiser website displayed on a large projector.
"There is another matter."
He looked toward the donors.
"Our financial crimes unit has evidence suggesting donations exceeding forty-five thousand dollars were obtained through false representations."
The ballroom erupted.
People began checking their phones.
One woman burst into tears.
"I donated because my daughter survived leukemia."
Another man shook with anger.
"You used a child to steal from us?"
The event organizer immediately walked to the microphone.
"This fundraiser is officially suspended."
"We will cooperate fully with investigators."
Julian finally found his voice.
"Mom..."
"You could have handled this privately."
I stared at him.
"Privately?"
"So Maya could spend another night freezing in your basement?"
His shoulders collapsed.
For the first time...
He had nothing left to defend.
As officers escorted Julian and Serena away, Maya quietly asked,
"Grandma..."
"Are they going to come back?"
I knelt beside her.
"Not tonight."
She looked relieved.
Not sad.
Relieved.
No child should ever feel safer watching her parents leave in handcuffs.
May you like
Yet she did.
That truth broke my heart more than anything else.
