Chapter 4: A Son's Promise

Chapter 4: A Son's Promise

Police officers arrived less than twenty minutes later.

The officers photographed Evelyn's injuries and collected both phones as evidence.

Serena tried several different explanations.

"It was just a misunderstanding."

"It was for social media."

"She agreed."

The videos disproved every claim.

As officers escorted Serena away, she looked back at Damian.

"You can't ruin my life over one mistake!"

Damian answered quietly.

"No."

"You ruined it the moment you decided my mother's dignity was worth less than online attention."

After they left, Damian sat beside Evelyn in the garden.

The afternoon sun was beginning to fade.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"I should have noticed the signs months ago."

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"I kept hoping she'd change."

He gently took her hand.

"You spent your whole life protecting me."

"It's my turn now."

The following week, Damian canceled the wedding.

He publicly announced that the relationship had ended after discovering unacceptable treatment of a family member.

He also donated to organizations supporting older adults who experience abuse and arranged counseling for his mother.

Months later, Evelyn stood in front of a mirror at a small salon.

A kind stylist carefully shaped her new haircut.

When she looked up, she smiled for the first time in a long while.

"It suits you," Damian said.

Evelyn laughed softly.

"It isn't the hair that makes me feel different."

"What is it?"

She squeezed her son's hand.

"Knowing I don't have to be afraid anymore."
