Chapter 3: The Recording No One Expected

Chapter 3: The Recording No One Expected
The investigators requested access to one of the private conference rooms.
Inside, a forensic specialist connected the damaged USB drive to a secure recovery computer.
Outside...
Nearly three hundred wedding guests waited.
No music played.
No one touched the expensive dinner.
Even Harrison, the groom, stood silently beside me.
He looked exhausted.
"Daniel..."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Is any of this true?"
I looked at my younger brother.
"I wish it weren't."
Twenty minutes later...
The conference room door opened.
The forensic analyst nodded once.
"It survived."
Richard closed his eyes in relief.
The lead investigator addressed everyone gathered nearby.
"The drive contains more than financial records."
He connected a projector to the ballroom screen.
Suddenly...
My father's face appeared.
The recording was dated just twelve days before he died.
He looked weak.
Much thinner than I remembered.
But his voice remained steady.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then Eleanor has probably stolen everything."
Gasps spread through the ballroom.
My father continued.
"I discovered forged signatures on multiple trust documents."
"I confronted her."
"She threatened to isolate my children if I reported her."
"I've copied every bank transfer..."
"Every offshore account..."
"Every fake contract..."
"If anything happens to me..."
"Give everything to the authorities."
Then he looked directly into the camera.
"Daniel..."
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you."
"And Sarah..."
"If you're standing beside my son..."
"Thank you for loving him."
People throughout the ballroom began wiping away tears.
Even Harrison looked shattered.
He slowly turned toward his mother.
"You did this?"
May you like
Eleanor opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
