Chapter 3: The Woman Who Saved My Mother

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Saved My Mother
The stranger's words echoed in my mind long after the call ended.
"Stop looking... before you discover why Vanessa married you."
For several minutes, I simply stared at my phone.
The room around me faded into silence.
The steady rhythm of my mother's heart monitor.
The soft hum of the hospital lights.
Even the sound of nurses walking past the door seemed distant.
Because one question kept repeating itself.
Had my marriage been a lie from the very beginning?
I slipped the phone into my pocket and forced myself to focus.
Right now, my mother mattered more than unanswered questions.
She looked exhausted, but her eyes followed me with quiet concern.
"I'm sorry," she whispered again.
I sat beside her bed and gently squeezed her hand.
"Mom, you have nothing to apologize for."
Tears welled in her eyes.
"I should have told you."
"You tried."
I glanced toward the door.
"She made sure I never heard you."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then my mother looked toward Elena.
"Stay."
Elena hesitated.
"I don't want to intrude."
"You're family now," my mother said softly.
Those four words surprised both of us.
Elena lowered her eyes.
She had spent months caring for my mother, yet she still behaved like someone afraid to take up space.
I realized I knew almost nothing about the woman who had risked her own safety to protect my mother.
Later that afternoon, after my mother had fallen asleep, Elena and I sat in the hospital cafeteria.
She wrapped both hands around a paper cup of tea.
The bandage above her eyebrow stood out against her dark hair.
It made me angry all over again.
"I'm sorry," I said quietly.
She looked up.
"For what?"
"For bringing you into this."
A faint smile crossed her face.
"You didn't."
"I hired you."
"You gave me a job."
She shook her head.
"What happened after that was my choice."
I studied her carefully.
She looked young.
Too young to carry so much sadness in her eyes.
"Tell me about yourself."
She looked uncomfortable.
"There isn't much to tell."
"I don't believe that."
She smiled politely but said nothing.
After a long silence, she finally spoke.
"I grew up in a small town."
"My father died when I was fifteen."
"My mother became ill not long after."
"I left nursing school to take care of her."
"You studied nursing?"
She nodded.
"I completed almost three years."
"What happened?"
"My mother needed surgery."
"I couldn't afford tuition anymore."
"So you became a caregiver."
She smiled sadly.
"I suppose life chose for me."
I remembered how gently she had helped my mother into the ambulance.
How she instinctively knew which injuries needed immediate attention.
It all made sense now.
"Why didn't you finish school later?"
She looked down at her tea.
"My mother passed away before I could."
Another pause.
"After that..."
"I just kept working."
Something about the way she said it broke my heart.
No self-pity.
No bitterness.
Just quiet acceptance.
"You never married?"
She laughed softly.
"I was too busy paying hospital bills."
For the first time since returning home, I smiled.
Only briefly.
But it was genuine.
Before either of us could say another word, Detective Olivia Harris entered the cafeteria.
She carried another folder.
"Mr. Carter."
I stood.
"Did you find something?"
She nodded.
"We identified the man on the security footage."
My pulse quickened.
"Who is he?"
She opened the folder.
A photograph stared back at me.
A man in his late fifties.
Expensive suit.
Confident smile.
Cold eyes.
"His name is Adrian Blake."
The name meant nothing to me.
"He specializes in estate acquisitions."
"What does that mean?"
"It means wealthy families hire him to restructure complicated assets."
She paused.
"Or..."
She looked directly at me.
"He convinces vulnerable people to sign away everything they own."
A chill ran through me.
"What's his connection to Vanessa?"
"We're still investigating."
She closed the folder.
"But there's something you should know."
"He has been investigated before."
"For fraud?"
"For targeting elderly property owners."
I looked toward my mother's room.
My hands clenched into fists.
This wasn't random.
It never had been.
That evening, I returned home alone.
The house was still under police supervision.
I walked through every room.
Trying to see it through new eyes.
The dining room where Vanessa hosted charity dinners.
The living room where she smiled for family photographs.
The kitchen where she had nearly beaten my mother.
Every memory had become suspicious.
I entered my office.
The desk was exactly as I had left it eight months earlier.
Except...
One drawer had been forced open.
Someone had searched it.
Inside were old engineering notebooks.
Tax records.
Project files.
Nothing valuable.
At least, nothing Vanessa wanted.
Then I noticed something strange.
One folder was upside down.
Inside it was a photograph.
A picture of my father shaking hands with another man.
My breath caught.
The other man was younger.
But unmistakable.
Adrian Blake.
They knew each other.
Long before Vanessa entered my life.
I turned the photograph over.
On the back, my father's handwriting read:
Never trust ambition without character.
My phone rang.
It was Detective Harris.
"We need you downtown."
"Why?"
"We found financial records."
"What kind of records?"
"Payments."
"From Adrian Blake..."
She paused.
"...to your wife."
An hour later, I sat inside the detective's office.
Bank statements covered the conference table.
Transfers.
Wire payments.
Cash deposits.
The first payment was dated...
Three months before I proposed to Vanessa.
I stared at the numbers.
"They were working together."
Detective Harris nodded.
"It appears so."
"How much?"
She slid another page toward me.
The total exceeded two million dollars.
I couldn't breathe.
"They paid her..."
She finished the sentence for me.
"...for something."
Driving back to the hospital that night, I barely noticed the traffic.
My entire marriage replayed in my mind.
The first time I met Vanessa.
How perfectly timed it all seemed.
The chance encounter.
The romance.
The engagement.
Had any of it been real?
When I entered my mother's room, Elena was asleep in the visitor's chair.
A blanket covered her shoulders.
One of the nurses smiled.
"She refused to leave your mother's side."
"How long?"
"Since you left."
I looked at Elena.
Even asleep, she looked exhausted.
My mother opened her eyes.
"Daniel?"
"I'm here."
She smiled faintly.
"She stayed every night."
I looked at Elena again.
"Even when Vanessa screamed at her."
My mother's voice trembled.
"Even when she wasn't being paid."
I turned slowly.
"What do you mean?"
Mom reached for my hand.
"Vanessa fired her two months ago."
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Elena in disbelief.
"She... she didn't work here anymore?"
My mother shook her head.
"She came anyway."
"Every day."
"She bought my medicine with her own money."
I felt something tighten painfully inside my chest.
All this time...
I believed I had hired someone to care for my mother.
The truth was...
Elena had cared for her long after she had every reason to walk away.
Without a salary.
Without recognition.
Without expecting anything in return.
Just before midnight, Elena stirred awake.
She noticed me watching her and quickly stood.
"I'm sorry."
"I didn't mean to fall asleep."
I couldn't find the right words.
Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.
"Why did you stay?"
She looked at my sleeping mother.
Then back at me.
"Because she reminded me of mine."
A tear rolled quietly down her cheek.
"I couldn't save my own mother."
"So I wasn't going to abandon yours."
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated again.
Another message from an unknown number.
Only one sentence.
"The housekeeper knows more than she's telling you."
I looked at Elena.
She noticed the change in my expression.
"What happened?"
I locked the phone screen.
"Nothing."
But deep inside...
I knew the message was right.
Elena wasn't lying to me.
She was protecting a secret.
One she believed could destroy everything.
