CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7
The Motherâs Secret
Nathan had spent his entire life believing his mother was the one person who would never lie to him.
His father had been complicated.
His family history had been complicated.
The Whitmore name itself carried too many shadows.
But Margaret...
Margaret was different.
She was the person who stayed awake when he was sick.
The person who held his hand when he lost his first business deal.
The person who told him kindness mattered more than power.
At least, that was the woman he remembered.
Now every memory had a question attached.
What else had she hidden?
The mansion felt different after that.
Not because anything had changed.
The walls were the same.
The furniture was the same.
The portraits were still hanging in the hall.
But Nathan no longer saw a home.
He saw a place filled with locked doors.
And he was finally searching for the keys.
"Mom."
Margaret looked up from her tea.
She already knew.
She had seen the expression on his face.
The same expression he had worn when he discovered Eleanor's betrayal.
"You talked to her."
Margaret said.
Nathan stopped.
"You knew?"
Margaret looked down.
"Yes."
He almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he was exhausted.
"Of course you knew."
Margaret flinched.
Nathan regretted the words immediately.
But the pain was too deep to ignore.
"Everyone knows everything except me."
"That isn't fair."
Margaret whispered.
Nathan stared.
"Isn't it?"
Silence.
Then Margaret said:
"You're right."
That surprised him.
She didn't defend herself.
She didn't explain.
She simply accepted it.
"I should have told you years ago."
Nathan sat down.
"Then tell me now."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Everything?"
"Everything."
The story began before Nathan was born.
William Whitmore was a powerful man.
Brilliant.
Ambitious.
And convinced that winning was the only thing that mattered.
Samuel Hale was different.
He believed business was built on trust.
He believed partners should protect each other.
Together, they built the company that became the foundation of the Whitmore fortune.
But William changed.
"When your grandfather saw how much money the company could make..."
Margaret said.
"He stopped seeing Samuel as a partner."
"He saw him as an obstacle."
Nathan listened silently.
William secretly moved ownership.
Changed contracts.
Manipulated records.
By the time Samuel realized what happened...
It was too late.
The world believed the company belonged only to the Whitmores.
Samuel lost everything.
His reputation.
His wealth.
His health.
And his family carried the pain.
"Victor blamed us."
Margaret whispered.
"And maybe he had a reason."
Nathan looked at her.
"You admit that?"
Margaret nodded.
"Because it's true."
Nathan had expected excuses.
He had expected his mother to defend the family.
Instead, she looked broken.
"Then why did you stay?"
He asked.
Margaret looked surprised.
"Stay?"
"Why stay with my father? Why protect this family name?"
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"Because I was afraid."
The answer shocked him.
"Of what?"
"Of losing everything."
Margaret explained.
After Samuel's downfall, the Hales disappeared from public life.
Everyone assumed the conflict was over.
But it wasn't.
Years later, Rebecca Hale returned.
And she brought proof.
Proof that William Whitmore had stolen the company.
Proof that the Whitmore fortune belonged partly to the Hale family.
Proof that everything could collapse.
"Your father knew."
Margaret said.
Nathan frowned.
"My father knew Rebecca had proof?"
"Yes."
"What did he do?"
Margaret looked away.
"He tried to make a deal."
Nathan felt cold.
"A deal?"
"He offered Rebecca money."
"And when she refused?"
Margaret did not answer.
She didn't have to.
Nathan stood.
"My father hurt her."
Margaret whispered:
"Yes."
The room became silent.
"Did he kill her?"
Margaret's face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
She looked at him.
"I don't know."
Those four words destroyed him.
Because his mother was finally admitting something.
She didn't know the truth.
She had spent years protecting a family she wasn't even sure deserved protection.
"Then why hide it?"
Nathan asked.
Margaret looked at him.
"Because after Rebecca disappeared..."
She swallowed.
"I found out I was pregnant with you."
Nathan froze.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"Everything."
Margaret explained.
Rebecca had left behind a final document.
A document proving the truth about the company.
But she had also left a warning.
If anything happened to her...
The document would only be revealed when the right person found it.
"Who was the right person?"
Nathan asked.
Margaret looked at him.
"You."
Nathan stepped back.
"Me?"
"Rebecca believed you could end what your grandfather started."
Nathan stared.
"She knew me?"
Margaret nodded.
"She met you."
The words felt impossible.
"How?"
Margaret touched the photograph.
"Because she saved you."
Then Margaret revealed the secret she had carried for twenty-eight years.
Nathan was not in the photograph because Rebecca was protecting him.
She was protecting him because someone wanted him gone.
Someone from inside the Whitmore family.
Someone who knew Nathan existed.
Someone who knew Rebecca trusted him.
"Who?"
Nathan whispered.
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know."
Nathan shook his head.
"Another secret."
"No."
Margaret grabbed his hand.
"This one is different."
"How?"
"Because I wasn't hiding it to protect the family."
A pause.
"I was hiding it because I was afraid you would hate me."
Nathan looked at her.
For the first time in days, he saw not a liar.
A frightened mother.
A woman who had made terrible choices.
But a woman who had also spent years carrying a burden alone.
Before Nathan could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Your mother finally told you."
Nathan froze.
"Who is this?"
The man laughed softly.
"You know exactly who I am."
Victor.
Nathan tightened his grip on the phone.
"What do you want?"
Victor's voice became serious.
"I want you to stop searching."
"Why?"
"Because the truth you are looking for..."
A pause.
"Will destroy the last person you still trust."
Nathan looked at Margaret.
"Who?"
Victor answered:
"Your mother."
The call ended.
Nathan stood frozen.
Because for the first time...
He wondered if Victor was threatening him.
May you like
Or warning him.
