Chapter 2 – Hidden Files

Chapter 2 – Hidden Files

The rain had grown heavier by the time Julian slipped out of Clara's hospital room.

The tiny memory card rested inside his clenched fist.

It weighed almost nothing.

Yet it felt heavier than anything he had ever carried.

Behind him, Clara lay awake despite her exhaustion, listening to the fading sound of his footsteps. She knew where he was going. Julian wasn't running from the truth.

For the first time in his life...

He was running toward it.

Julian ignored the elevators and took the emergency stairwell instead.

His mother knew every executive in the hospital.

She had eyes everywhere.

Security guards greeted her by name.

Doctors welcomed her with handshakes.

Even the nurses seemed eager to please her.

If Eleanor wanted to intercept him, she would begin by watching the elevators.

The stairwell was empty.

Concrete walls echoed with every step.

His heartbeat pounded louder than the sound of the rain outside.

On the sixth floor landing, he stopped.

His hands trembled as he removed his laptop from his leather briefcase.

The memory card slid into the reader.

A folder appeared on the screen.

PRIVATE ARCHIVE

Protected.

Password required.

Julian sighed.

Of course.

Clara had always been meticulous.

His phone buzzed.

A text message.

Password: DaisyBloom24.

No explanation.

No signature.

Only those two words.

A small smile appeared despite everything.

Daisy.

The flower they had planted together during the first spring after their wedding.

Bloom.

The promise they had whispered to each other whenever life became difficult.

Twenty-four.

The date their daughter had been due.

He entered the password.

The folder unlocked.

Then...

Hundreds of files appeared.

Not dozens.

Hundreds.

Videos.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

Scanned financial records.

Emails.

Medical reports.

Everything carefully organized by date.

Julian's stomach tightened.

Clara hadn't been paranoid.

She had been building a case.

The first folder read:

"Conversations."

He clicked.

A video filled the screen.

The angle came from somewhere high inside a room.

The image showed Clara's home office.

Date.

Five months earlier.

Eleanor sat comfortably across from Clara, sipping tea.

She smiled warmly.

"You know," Eleanor said, "raising a child requires emotional stability."

Clara smiled politely.

"I agree."

"I'm relieved."

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Because if anything ever happened..."

"...Julian would naturally keep the baby."

Clara nodded slowly.

"Of course."

"And if Julian were unable to..."

Eleanor's smile widened.

"The child would stay with family."

She paused deliberately.

"With me."

Silence.

Then Clara spoke.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

Eleanor stood.

"I always get what belongs to my family."

The recording ended.

Julian stared at the frozen image.

His mother had never spoken that way around him.

Never.

He opened another file.

Three months earlier.

The Vance Estate.

Kitchen.

Two housekeepers cleaned while believing they were alone.

One whispered,

"Poor Mrs. Clara."

The other nodded.

"I heard Mrs. Vance ordered the nursery prepared months ago."

"At the mansion?"

"No."

"The west wing."

"The old nursery."

The younger woman frowned.

"But that's where Julian grew up."

The older housekeeper lowered her voice.

"Exactly."

"They're preparing for another child."

"No..."

"They're preparing for the baby."

"What about Clara?"

Silence.

Finally—

"I don't think she's supposed to stay."

The video stopped.

Julian's breathing became uneven.

He opened another.

This one lasted only thirty seconds.

Dominic speaking on the phone.

"...the psychiatrist has already agreed."

Pause.

"No, she doesn't have to actually be unstable."

"We only need temporary commitment."

Another pause.

"Once custody changes hands..."

"...everything else becomes irrelevant."

The call ended.

Julian replayed it.

Twice.

Three times.

His cousin's voice remained unmistakable.

He opened the next folder.

Its title made his blood run cold.

Financial Transfers.

Spreadsheet after spreadsheet.

Wire transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Trusts.

Shell companies.

Every document linked together with notes written in Clara's precise handwriting.

A final document stood out.

Payments Connected to St. Gabriel Medical Center

Julian opened it.

Several names appeared.

Hospital administrator.

Legal consultant.

Chief psychiatrist.

Large payments.

Repeated monthly.

Consulting fees.

Charitable donations.

Research grants.

Different names.

Different accounts.

The money always came from companies owned by Vance Holdings.

He whispered,

"No..."

Clara had not only collected evidence of intimidation.

She had uncovered bribery.

Systematic bribery.

Someone had purchased influence throughout the hospital.

His phone rang again.

Mother.

He rejected it.

Immediately.

Another call.

Dominic.

Rejected.

Another.

Unknown number.

He ignored it.

Then...

His screen lit up with a message from Clara.

Don't watch Folder Nine until you're somewhere safe.

He frowned.

Too late.

His curiosity won.

He opened Folder Nine.

The file name simply read:

Father.

The video quality was older.

Several years old.

Hidden camera.

Julian recognized his father's study immediately.

Richard Vance sat behind his desk.

Older.

Thinner.

Tired.

Across from him stood Eleanor.

"So you've decided?"

Richard spoke quietly.

"I'm changing my will."

Eleanor's smile disappeared.

"You can't."

"I already have."

"Our grandson deserves better."

"Our son deserves freedom."

"You've controlled this family long enough."

Eleanor's voice turned icy.

"You've become sentimental."

"I've become honest."

Richard stood.

"If anything happens to me..."

"...Julian deserves the truth."

Eleanor laughed softly.

"Nothing is going to happen."

The recording ended.

Julian stared at the blank screen.

His father had died two months later.

Official cause.

Heart attack.

He had been only sixty-one.

Julian leaned against the cold concrete wall.

His legs suddenly felt weak.

He remembered the funeral.

His mother had cried.

She had held his hand.

She had whispered,

"Your father loved us."

Now...

Those words sounded different.

Had Richard been afraid?

Downstairs...

Eleanor watched the entrance through the glass doors.

"He should have answered by now."

Dominic checked his phone.

"He's rejecting every call."

She frowned.

"That's unlike him."

A young associate hurried into the room.

"Mrs. Vance..."

"What?"

"We've located hospital surveillance."

Eleanor looked up.

"And?"

"The corridor cameras were offline."

"When?"

"The exact thirty minutes we needed."

Dominic smiled.

"Good."

The associate hesitated.

"But..."

"The maternity suite wasn't connected to the hospital system."

Silence.

Eleanor slowly turned.

"What did you say?"

"The suite had an independent recording device."

Dominic stood abruptly.

"Impossible."

"We searched."

"Apparently..."

"...we searched the room."

"Not the ventilation."

No one spoke.

For the first time all day...

Eleanor looked uncertain.

Meanwhile...

Julian continued searching.

One folder remained unopened.

Its title was different from all the others.

Instead of dates...

It contained only one sentence.

If you're reading this, it means you finally chose to believe me.

His fingers hesitated over the mouse.

He clicked.

A single video appeared.

Clara sat alone in her office.

The recording had clearly been made weeks before the birth.

She looked directly into the hidden camera.

"If you've found this..."

"...then something happened."

She took a slow breath.

"I hope I'm wrong."

"I hope you're watching this because we're laughing about how overprepared I was."

A sad smile crossed her face.

"But if I'm right..."

"...then Eleanor has already made her move."

She reached for a thick binder.

"I need you to understand something."

"This was never about the baby."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

Clara continued.

"It's about the company."

"The Vance Foundation."

"The family trust."

"The inheritance."

"I discovered someone has been stealing from it for almost fifteen years."

She opened several documents.

"Millions of dollars."

"Disguised as charitable donations."

"Hidden through fake consulting firms."

She looked directly into the camera.

"I traced every dollar."

"And every trail..."

"...leads back to one person."

Julian held his breath.

Clara whispered the name.

"Eleanor."

His world shattered.

Not because he believed the accusation.

Because Clara had attached proof.

Bank records.

Tax filings.

Property purchases.

Signed authorizations.

Everything.

His wife hadn't built a theory.

She had built a prosecution.

Suddenly—

Footsteps echoed inside the stairwell.

Fast.

Several people.

Coming up.

Julian immediately removed the memory card.

He closed the laptop.

Voices.

Dominic.

"Search every floor."

Another man answered,

"He couldn't have gone far."

Julian's pulse exploded.

They weren't calling him anymore.

They were hunting him.

He quietly stepped through the fire exit onto the rooftop.

Cold rain struck his face.

Wind whipped across the empty helipad.

The city lights blurred beneath dark clouds.

His phone vibrated once.

Another message from Clara.

They're looking for the wrong evidence.

A second message arrived immediately afterward.

The memory card is only a copy.

Julian froze.

Copy?

Then where was the original?

Before he could think further...

Another text appeared.

Just four words.

Check our daughter's bracelet.

Julian's eyes widened.

Back inside the maternity ward...

His newborn daughter slept peacefully in the nursery.

Around her tiny wrist rested an ordinary-looking hospital identification band.

Ordinary...

Except Clara had designed it herself.

And hidden inside it...

May you like

Was the only original copy of every file that could destroy the Vance family forever.
