Olivia's father, Daniel Carter, had remained strangely quiet.
Finally, he spoke.
"I found Olivia outside a rural church when she was a toddler."
Richard looked at him sharply.
"You adopted her?"
Daniel nodded.
"There was no missing-person report matching her."
He hesitated.
"She only had that necklace."
Olivia stared at him.
"You never told me."
"I wanted you to grow up knowing you were loved..."
He lowered his eyes.
"...not wondering why someone lost you."
Richard quietly asked,
"Did anyone ever search for her after that?"
Daniel handed over a worn envelope.
"I've carried this for twenty-three years."
Inside was the newspaper clipping announcing Emma Hayes's disappearance.
