Chapter 1: The Man They Said Was Dead

Chapter 1: The Man They Said Was Dead

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Even the string quartet stopped playing.

Damien Rowe stood in the doorway wearing a charcoal suit beneath a long black overcoat. A thin scar crossed his jaw—proof that the ambush in Chicago had nearly succeeded.

Behind him, a dozen security men spread through the room with quiet precision.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody ran.

They simply stood there, sensing that something far more dangerous than wealth had just entered Briarwell Academy.

Damien's eyes swept across the ballroom.

The crystal chandeliers.

The terrified guests.

The phones recording.

Then...

They found Maren.

She was still curled on the marble floor, one trembling hand wrapped protectively around her stomach.

For a heartbeat, he didn't move.

His face remained perfectly still.

Only those who truly knew him would have recognized the fury burning behind his eyes.

He crossed the room in seconds.

Without saying a word, he knelt beside her.

"Maren."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I thought you were dead."

"So did everyone who wanted me dead."

His hand gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Then he looked at the faint blood staining the marble beneath her.

Everything inside him changed.

His voice became dangerously calm.

"Who touched her?"

Nobody answered.

Chloe Ashford laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

"She's just the janitor."

Damien slowly stood.

"No."

His voice echoed through the ballroom.

"She is the mother of my child."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Headmaster Grant Ellison stumbled backward.

"The... the mother..."

Damien reached beneath Maren's uniform collar and carefully lifted the delicate gold chain she had never taken off.

The ring hanging from it glimmered beneath the ballroom lights.

"I asked her to marry me the night I disappeared."

"I never had the chance to hear her answer."

Maren smiled through tears.

"My answer was always yes."

Damien kissed her forehead before turning toward the crowd.

Then he spoke the sentence that made every powerful family in the room go pale.

"Lock the doors."

No one leaves until I know exactly who thought humiliating a pregnant woman was entertainment.
