Part 2 – "The Man They Thought Was Dead"

The ballroom fell silent.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The man standing in the doorway wore a black tailored coat dusted with rain. A faint scar crossed his left cheek, but his cold gray eyes were unmistakable.

Damien Rowe.

The man Maren had mourned for seven months.

His gaze swept across the room.

The shattered trash bag.

The frightened guests.

The students still holding up their phones.

Then...

He saw Maren.

Curled on the marble floor.

One hand wrapped protectively around her swollen belly.

Tears streaked across her face.

Time seemed to stop.

"Maren..."

His voice was barely more than a whisper.

She looked up.

For a moment she thought she was dreaming.

Then she began to cry.

"You..."

"They said you were dead."

Damien crossed the room in seconds.

His men instinctively spread out, sealing every exit.

No one tried to stop them.

He knelt beside Maren, ignoring his expensive suit as it soaked up her tears.

Carefully, he touched her cheek.

"I'm sorry."

"I searched every city."

"Every airport."

"Every hospital."

"I never stopped looking."

Maren grabbed his sleeve with trembling fingers.

"Our baby..."

Damien's eyes dropped to her stomach.

Everything inside him went still.

"Our... baby?"

She nodded through tears.

"I was going to tell you that night."
