Chapter 3 – A Legacy Worth Protecting
The emergency board meeting began before midnight.
No music.
No champagne.
Only trustees seated around a polished walnut table.
Julian placed a single braid of dark hair in the center.
No dramatic speeches.
No threats.
Only evidence.
"The issue before us," he said calmly, "is not a hairstyle."
"It is whether the Mercer Foundation tolerates public humiliation, abuse of authority, and the mistreatment of employees."
The security footage spoke for itself.
It showed Mara accidentally brushing against a floral arrangement while helping an elderly guest who had nearly slipped.
It showed Vivienne seizing the embroidery scissors.
It showed the braid falling among the orchids.
And it showed every second that followed.
After a lengthy discussion, the board voted to remove Vivienne as chair of the foundation pending the outcome of an independent review.
She looked at Julian in disbelief.
"You'd destroy your own family over a servant?"
Julian answered without hesitation.
"No."
"I refused to sacrifice my family to protect cruelty."
Then he looked toward Mara.
"My family is standing beside me."

The room fell silent.
For the first time, everyone understood exactly whom he meant.
