Chapter 2: The Cost of Silence

Chapter 2: The Cost of Silence
Daniel pushed the documents away.
"This is ridiculous."
Jonathan calmly slid another folder toward him.
Inside were years of emails, financial records, and signed agreements.
Each one showed Emma solving crises behind the scenes while Daniel accepted public praise.
His father stared at the signatures.
"She negotiated the overseas expansion?"
Jonathan nodded.
"Personally."
His mother whispered,
"The medical technology patent..."
"Also Emma."
The emergency financing that saved the company during the recession.
Emma.
The software licensing agreement that doubled annual revenue.
Emma.
Every achievement Daniel proudly called his own carried her fingerprints.
Emma folded her hands.
"I never wanted recognition."
"I only wanted respect."
Daniel looked at her desperately.
"You should have told me."
"I tried."
She met his eyes.
"But every time I spoke, you interrupted me."
Every dinner.
Every meeting.
Every celebration.
Her voice had been politely ignored until silence became easier than fighting to be heard.
Jonathan placed the final document before Daniel.
A petition for divorce.
Emma had signed it weeks earlier.
Tonight was simply the moment she chose to stop pretending.
Daniel reached for her hand.
She quietly stood before he could touch it.
"You think this marriage ended because of one embarrassing dinner."
May you like
She shook her head gently.
"It ended one small dismissal at a time."
