Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Mop

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Mop
The red carpet fell silent.
Hundreds of phones that had been recording celebrity arrivals now turned toward Maya.
The actress stood perfectly still as Maya knelt beside the ruined gown.
"What do you need?" the celebrity asked quietly.
"A pair of fabric scissors," Maya replied.
"And every safety pin the staff can find."
Regina laughed loudly.
"This is ridiculous! She's a janitor, not a designer!"
No one moved.
Then an elderly tailor who had been overseeing wardrobe preparations stepped forward and silently handed Maya his professional sewing kit.
"You've done this before," he said.
Maya gave a small nod.
"A long time ago."
With astonishing speed, she folded the torn silk into elegant pleats, reshaped the damaged train into an asymmetrical cascade, and secured every seam so precisely that the rip became the centerpiece of the design instead of its flaw.
The crowd gasped.
Camera flashes erupted from every direction.
The actress slowly turned toward the mirrors placed along the entrance.
She smiled.
"It's even more beautiful than the original."
Applause spread across the tent.
Regina's confident smile disappeared.
"That's impossible," she muttered.
The elderly tailor looked directly at her.
"No."
"The impossible part is that you never asked who she was."
He reached into his wallet and unfolded an old magazine clipping.
On the cover stood a younger Maya beside models wearing award-winning couture.
Beneath the photograph were the words:
International Designer of the Year — Maya Laurent.
A decade earlier, Maya had disappeared from the fashion world after her husband died and crushing debt forced her to sell her company.
