CHAPTER 2: The Woman No One Recognized

CHAPTER 2: The Woman No One Recognized

The lobby was silent.

Even the pianist in the corner had stopped playing.

Vanessa Caldwell stared at the elderly woman, then laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

She folded her arms.

"If this hotel were yours, everyone here would know who you are."

The old woman smiled gently.

"Would they?"

She reached into the worn cloth bag and removed a small leather notebook.

It wasn't expensive.

It wasn't flashy.

But when the general manager saw it, the color drained from his face.

He hurried across the marble floor.

"Mrs. Eleanor Ashford..."

His voice trembled.

"You came without telling us."

The employees immediately straightened.

Several longtime staff members lowered their heads respectfully.

Vanessa looked around in confusion.

"Who is she?"

The manager swallowed.

"She's the founder of the Ashford Hospitality Group."

"The woman who built this hotel."

Gasps rippled through the lobby.

For decades, Eleanor Ashford had quietly owned one of the largest luxury hotel companies in the country.

After retiring, she had become known for occasionally visiting her properties without announcing herself.

She believed the true character of a hotel could only be seen when no one thought the owner was watching.

Today, she had come dressed as an ordinary traveler.

Within five minutes, she had learned everything she needed to know.

Eleanor looked calmly at Vanessa.

"I wasn't testing the hotel."

"I was testing my family."

Vanessa's confident smile disappeared.

"My... family?"

Eleanor nodded.

"My son married you six months ago."

"And I wanted to meet the woman who now carries our family name."

Tears began gathering in Vanessa's eyes.

She finally understood.

May you like

The woman she had just insulted...

Was her mother-in-law.
