The crystal glass shattered across the marble floor.
Red wine spread like a stain between their feet.
No one moved.
Eleanor slowly lowered her hand.
"What is wrong with you?"
Ava stood.
"I'm not drinking anything."
"I'm not signing anything."
Across the dining table, her brother-in-law quietly slid a thick folder behind his plate.
Too late.
Ava had already seen it.
She looked directly at Eleanor.
"So that's what tonight is really about."
Eleanor forced a smile.
"You've been under a lot of stress."
"We're only trying to help."
"These papers would make things easier."
Ava didn't even reach for them.
"What kind of papers?"
Silence.
Finally, Eleanor answered.
"A temporary power of attorney."
"So someone can manage your affairs."
"My affairs?"
"After your husband passed away..."
"...you've been emotional."
Ava laughed softly.
"No."
