Chapter 3 — The Secret Behind the Missing Documents

Chapter 3 — The Secret Behind the Missing Documents

Secrets have a strange way of changing shape.

When people hide something, they convince themselves they are protecting it.

A reputation.

A family.

A business.

A person.

But eventually, every secret becomes something else.

A weapon.

And inside the Whitmore mansion, there were many weapons.

I just never realized how many were pointed at me.

The morning after I heard Serena and Evelyn talking, I called Detective Laura Chen before sunrise.

I sat in the guest bedroom.

Not our bedroom.

Not anymore.

I wasn’t sure when that happened.

When Daniel’s silence became distance.

When my home became a place where I felt like a stranger.

But I knew one thing.

I no longer felt safe pretending everything was normal.

Laura answered immediately.

“Emma.”

Her voice was serious.

“Are you safe?”

I looked toward the closed door.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Are you sure?”

That question told me everything.

She knew.

She knew people often lied when they were afraid.

“I heard them.”

“Who?”

“Serena and Evelyn.”

Silence.

“What did they say?”

I closed my eyes.

“They said the documents were a problem.”

Laura’s voice changed.

“What documents?”

“The missing Whitmore documents.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Laura asked:

“Emma, before the fall, did Serena ever mention these documents to you?”

“Yes.”

“What exactly did she say?”

I remembered the dinner.

The accusation hidden inside polite words.

“She said the documents were important family records.”

“And?”

“She implied I knew where they were.”

Laura exhaled.

“Emma, I need you to listen carefully.”

“I am.”

“These documents may be the reason you were attacked.”

The words still shocked me.

Even though part of me already knew.

“Why?”

Laura paused.

“Because we found something.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?”

“A connection between the missing files and an old Whitmore inheritance dispute.”

I sat up slowly.

“An inheritance?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

Laura hesitated.

“Daniel’s grandfather.”

The name carried weight.

Everyone knew Alexander Whitmore Sr.

The man who built the Whitmore empire.

The man whose decisions shaped the family.

The man whose approval everyone still chased, even after his death.

“What was in those documents?”

Laura answered carefully.

“We don’t know yet.”

A pause.

“But someone is desperate enough to hurt you to keep them hidden.”

After the call ended, I sat there for a long time.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

Serena didn’t push me because she hated me.

She pushed me because she was afraid.

And people who are afraid of losing power do dangerous things.

Later that morning, Daniel found me in the kitchen.

“You’re awake early.”

I looked at him.

“So are you.”

He hesitated.

“I wanted to talk.”

I almost smiled.

That was something Daniel always said after things were already broken.

I want to talk.

Never:

I should have listened.

Never:

I should have protected you.

“What about?”

“Last night.”

My expression changed.

“What about it?”

“I know things have been difficult.”

“That’s one way to describe it.”

He sighed.

“Emma.”

“No, Daniel.”

I put down my coffee cup.

“You need to understand something.”

He looked at me.

“I don’t need you to tell me Serena is family.”

His face changed.

“I wasn’t going to.”

“Yes, you were.”

A pause.

“Because every time she hurts someone, everyone explains why she did it.”

Daniel stayed silent.

“Do you know what the worst part is?”

He looked at me.

“I expected Serena to lie.”

A pause.

“I expected Evelyn to defend her.”

Another pause.

“But I didn’t expect my husband to stand there and wonder if I was telling the truth.”

His eyes lowered.

That hurt him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand.

“I’m sorry.”

The words were quiet.

But they were not enough.

Not yet.

“Sorry doesn’t change what happened.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

I looked at him.

“Because if you did, you would be asking why your sister was searching for documents instead of asking whether I was hurt.”

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Laura.

Again.

I answered.

“Emma.”

Her voice was urgent.

“We found something.”

Daniel looked at me.

I put the phone on speaker.

“What?”

“We traced one of the missing documents.”

My heart raced.

“Where?”

Laura paused.

“Inside Whitmore Foundation archives.”

I frowned.

“But those archives are locked.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“That’s the problem.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Laura continued.

“Someone accessed them using an authorized family security code.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Whose code?”

Laura answered.

“Serena Whitmore’s.”

Silence.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Laura replied calmly.

“We have records.”

“My sister wouldn’t—”

He stopped.

Because he heard himself.

Again.

Defending before knowing.

I looked at him.

There it was.

The same instinct.

Protect Serena.

Question me.

Laura continued.

“We also found something else.”

“What?”

“The document Serena accessed wasn’t a financial record.”

A pause.

“It was a sealed letter.”

I frowned.

“A letter?”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

Laura’s voice became quieter.

“Emma…”

A pause.

“It was written by Alexander Whitmore Sr.”

The room went still.

My mind raced.

Why would Serena steal a letter from Daniel’s grandfather?

Why hide it?

Why attack me?

Laura continued.

“We are trying to get a copy of the letter now.”

“Do you know what it says?”

“No.”

A pause.

“But based on where it was stored…”

She hesitated.

“It was probably connected to the future of the Whitmore family.”

After the call ended, Daniel walked away.

He looked shaken.

Not because of Serena.

Because the truth was getting harder to ignore.

That afternoon, something happened that changed everything.

I received an anonymous envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just my name written across the front.

Emma Whitmore.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old photograph.

Alexander Whitmore Sr. sitting beside a younger Daniel.

And standing behind them…

Serena.

On the back of the photo were six words.

“Ask Daniel what he never told you.”

My hands went cold.

Because I knew something immediately.

The missing documents were not only about Serena.

They were about Daniel.

That evening, I confronted him.

I placed the photograph on the table.

His face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Where did you get this?”

I stared at him.

“So you know what it means?”

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

He sat down slowly.

“Emma…”

“What are you hiding?”

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Before my grandfather died…”

A pause.

“He changed his will.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Daniel looked at me.

“And Serena was never supposed to inherit what she thought she would.”

The room became silent.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked away.

And his answer was the one thing I never expected.

“Me.”

I stared at him.

“But why would Serena attack me?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she believes…”

A pause.

“You are the reason she lost everything.”

At that moment, I understood.

The staircase.

The lies.

The missing documents.

It was never about paperwork.

It was about power.

And Serena Whitmore had spent years believing power belonged to her.

But the truth hidden inside those documents was bigger than anyone knew.

Because Alexander Whitmore Sr. had not only changed the inheritance.

He had left instructions.

Instructions that could destroy the Whitmore family…

or save it.

And Serena was willing to hurt anyone to make sure nobody ever read them.
