Chapter 2 – The Call

Chapter 2 – The Call
Olivia's fingers trembled as she pressed the call button.
"Detective Rose..." she whispered through the pain. "It happened."
There was a brief silence.
Then came the calm reply.
"We're already on our way."
The line disconnected.
Olivia pressed both hands against her stomach, struggling to stay conscious.
At the top of the staircase, Vanessa's face had turned pale.
"Who was that?" she asked.
Margaret grabbed her arm.
"It doesn't matter. She won't dare—"
The sharp sound of tires screeching outside cut her off.
Seconds later, the front door burst open.
"Police! Nobody move!"
Detective Amelia Rose entered first, followed by uniformed officers and paramedics.
She took one look at Olivia lying at the bottom of the stairs and immediately knelt beside her.
"Get EMS in here now!"
As paramedics rushed in, Detective Rose stood and faced Vanessa.
"Were you standing at the top of the stairs?"
Vanessa forced herself to cry.
"She lost her balance. I tried to catch her."
Margaret nodded frantically.
"Exactly. My poor daughter-in-law is just confused."
Detective Rose didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her coat and produced a search warrant.
Margaret frowned.
"What is this?"
"The result of a six-month investigation."
The room fell silent.

Olivia had not called because she expected someone to believe her.
She called because the trap they had spent months preparing had finally closed.
