CHAPTER 1 — The Moment Everything Changed

The pregnant woman didn’t move after the call.

She stayed on the cold marble landing, one hand pressed against her stomach, the other still holding the phone tightly.

Above her, the blonde woman—Claire—was still crying loudly.

“It was an accident!” Claire sobbed, burying her face into the caretaker’s shoulder. “She attacked me first! I only pushed her away!”

The caretaker hesitated, unsure where to look.

On one side: a woman in tears, trembling, convincing.

On the other: a pregnant woman bleeding quietly, almost invisible.

Then the pregnant woman slowly closed her eyes.

Not in pain.

In focus.

Her breathing steadied.

And for the first time since the fall… she smiled faintly.

Claire didn’t notice.

No one did.

Because everyone had already chosen who the victim was supposed to be.

The pregnant woman pressed the phone closer.

“Detective Ruiz… it’s already happened. Send everyone here immediately.”

A pause.

Then she added softly:

“And activate Unit 4 surveillance protocol.”
