The ambulance doors slammed shut as sirens pierced the afternoon sky.
Harrison Cole stood motionless beside the courthouse steps while paramedics fought to stabilize his younger sister, Emily. Blood stained the cuffs of his tailored suit where he had pressed against her wound.
"Thirty-two weeks pregnant," one paramedic shouted. "Possible placental abruption. Notify the trauma team."
Harrison nodded once.
No panic.
No shouting.
No threats.
Only silence.
Witnesses expected him to chase after the woman responsible. Instead, he watched every face in the crowd as if committing each expression to memory.
The woman who had shoved Emily—Victoria Langford—backed away, her trembling hands covering her mouth.
"I... I didn't mean..."
