Chapter 1 – The Recording

Chapter 1 – The Recording
The living room looked as if a storm had torn through it.
The glass display cabinet had shattered into hundreds of glittering pieces.
Family photographs lay scattered across the hardwood floor.
Gold trophies collected over decades rolled beneath the furniture.
At the center of the wreckage lay seventy-six-year-old Margaret Bennett.
Blood trickled from a cut on her forehead.
Her breathing was shallow.
Standing above her was Claire.
Perfect hair.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect panic.
"Oh my God!" Claire cried as neighbors rushed through the open front door.
"She slipped!"
"I tried to catch her!"
Margaret said nothing.
She simply looked toward the hallway.
Seconds later, Ethan Bennett arrived home.
"What happened?"
Claire immediately ran into his arms.
"Your mother fell."
"I told her not to touch the cabinet."
"She lost her balance."
Ethan stared at the broken glass.
Then at his mother.
"Mom?"
Margaret slowly raised one trembling hand.
She didn't point at Claire.
She didn't argue.
She simply reached into the pocket of her cardigan.
A small black voice recorder slipped onto the floor.
Claire's smile froze.
"No..."
Margaret whispered,
"Press...play."
Ethan bent down.
He pressed the single silver button.
Static crackled.
Then Claire's voice filled the silent room.
"If you tell Ethan how I treat you..."
"I'll make sure he believes you've lost your mind."
Another recording followed.
"You'll eat when I decide."
"You'll stay in your room."
"Nobody will believe an old woman over me."
Then came today's recording.
"You should be grateful I even let you live in this house."
A loud shove.
Glass exploding.
Margaret crying out in pain.
And finally...
Claire's voice again.
"Perfect."
"I'll tell Ethan you fell."
Silence filled the room.
Claire's face turned white.
May you like
The lie had lasted less than two minutes.
The truth had been recording itself for months.
