The emergency room doors slammed shut behind the doctors.
"Thirty-two weeks pregnant," one nurse shouted.
"Possible placental abruption!"
Marcus Bennett stood frozen outside the operating room, his shirt soaked with his wife's blood.
His mother, Eleanor Bennett, remained several feet away.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that," she whispered.
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
"You pushed her."
"I only wanted her to leave."
"You pushed a pregnant woman down a marble staircase."
Eleanor burst into tears.
"She made you choose her over your family!"
Marcus's voice became frighteningly calm.
"My wife is my family."
Just then, Detective Sarah Collins entered the hospital.
"Mr. Bennett, we've secured the hallway surveillance footage."
Eleanor's breathing stopped.
"I want my lawyer."
The detective nodded.
"That's your right."
