Chapter 7 – The Bride's Revenge

Chapter 7 – The Bride's Revenge
Victoria Ashford didn't sleep.
The DNA report remained on her nightstand.
Unopened now.
Not because she didn't know what it said.
Because she knew every word by heart.
Probability of biological paternity: 99.99998%.
The truth had become impossible to escape.
Lily Martinez wasn't just the maid's daughter.
She was Ethan Caldwell's daughter.
And if Ethan discovered that before the wedding...
Victoria would lose everything she had spent years building.
At dawn, she made a decision.
If she couldn't erase the truth...
She could destroy the woman who carried it.
The next morning, Adrian Wolfe arrived at her private office.
He immediately sensed something had changed.
"You look like you haven't slept."
"I haven't."
Victoria closed the blinds before speaking.
"I need another job done."
"What kind of job?"
"I want Rosa Martinez discredited."
Wolfe frowned.
"You mean investigated?"
"I mean ruined."
Silence filled the room.
Finally, he asked,
"Do you have evidence she's done something wrong?"
Victoria hesitated.
"No."
"Then what exactly am I supposed to find?"
"Anything."
"An unpaid bill."
"A disciplinary record."
"A former boyfriend."
"I don't care."
"I need people to stop seeing her as innocent."
Wolfe slowly closed his notebook.
"I don't fabricate evidence."
"I'm not asking you to."
"Yes, you are."
She looked away.
"I'll pay double."
"It isn't about money."
"It's about my license."
"My reputation."
Victoria's voice hardened.
"Then we're finished."
Wolfe stood.
"I think we are."
He walked out without looking back.
Victoria watched the office door close.
For the first time in years...
Money had failed her.
By afternoon, she found another solution.
If professionals refused to do it...
She would do it herself.
Two days later...
A well-known celebrity gossip website published an anonymous article.
"Billionaire's Maid Growing Suspiciously Close to Groom Weeks Before Wedding."
The article included carefully cropped photographs.
Rosa handing Ethan a cup of coffee.
Ethan smiling at Lily in the garden.
The moment Lily held Ethan's hand after falling from the piano bench.
Every image was technically real.
Every caption was carefully twisted.
"Sources claim the employee has become unusually comfortable inside the Caldwell estate."
"Friends worry the billionaire is being emotionally manipulated through the child."
"Questions remain about the child's father."
Within hours...
The story spread across social media.
By evening...
News vans gathered outside the mansion gates.
Camera flashes lit up the driveway.
Reporters shouted questions as staff vehicles entered and left.
"Mr. Caldwell!"
"Is the maid your mistress?"
"Who is Lily Martinez's father?"
"Has the wedding been canceled?"
Security struggled to keep them behind the gates.
Inside the mansion...
Rosa stood frozen in the kitchen.
One of the younger housekeepers silently handed her a phone.
"You should see this."
Rosa read the article once.
Then again.
Her face turned pale.
She immediately switched the screen off before Lily could see it.
"Mama?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Why are there so many people outside?"
Rosa forced a smile.
"They're just noisy."
"They look angry."
"They'll go home soon."
But Rosa didn't believe her own words.
That evening...
She knocked softly on Ethan's study door.
"Come in."
She stepped inside.
"I need to resign."
Ethan looked up instantly.
"What?"
"I can't stay here."
He stood.
"Why?"
She placed her phone on his desk.
The article filled the screen.
Ethan read every word.
His jaw tightened with each sentence.
When he finished...
He looked at her.
"You believe this?"
"No."
"I believe it will get worse."
"My daughter doesn't deserve this."
Neither of them noticed...
She had said my daughter with fierce protectiveness.
But Ethan noticed something else.
The fear in her eyes.
Not fear for herself.
Fear for Lily.
"I'll leave tonight."
Rosa reached for the resignation letter she had already written.
Ethan didn't even look at it.
Instead...
He quietly tore it in half.
Then into quarters.
Then dropped the pieces into the trash.
Rosa stared.
"What are you doing?"
"You aren't leaving."
"I have to."
"No."
"People are already talking."
"Let them."
"They'll destroy your reputation."
Ethan's eyes never left hers.
"My reputation isn't more important than a little girl's safety."
Rosa's voice broke.
"You don't understand."
"Then help me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it again.
How could she tell him?
How could she say:
Because she's your daughter.
Instead, she whispered,
"Please..."
"Just let us go."
Ethan stepped closer.
His voice remained calm.
"No."
Rosa blinked.
"No?"
"No."
"I won't force you to work."
"But I won't let you walk out that gate while reporters are hunting you."
"I'll arrange security."
"I'll deal with the press."
"And if anyone wants answers..."
"They can ask me."
For a moment...
Rosa saw the man she had fallen in love with years ago.
Not the billionaire.
Not the Caldwell heir.
Just Ethan.
The man who once walked across Manhattan in the rain because she had forgotten her umbrella.
A loud knock interrupted them.
The head of security entered.
"Sir..."
"The reporters found the staff entrance."
"They're questioning employees."
Ethan didn't hesitate.
"Close every gate."
"No interviews."
"No staff member speaks to the media."
"And if anyone crosses the property line..."
"Call the police."
"Yes, sir."
Upstairs...
Victoria listened from the landing.
She had expected Ethan to distance himself from Rosa.
Instead...
He had protected her.
Protected them.
Something cold settled inside her chest.
She had started the fire.
But Ethan had chosen which side he would stand on.
And it wasn't hers.
Later that night...
Victoria confronted him in the library.
"You embarrassed me today."
Ethan didn't look up from the newspaper.
"I wasn't aware this was about you."
"It is."
"Our names are all over the news."
He folded the paper.
"You leaked the story."
Her eyes widened.
"I beg your pardon?"
"The photos."
"They were taken inside this house."
"So?"
"Only a handful of people had access."
"You think I'd humiliate myself?"
"I think you're frightened."
Silence.
Victoria held his gaze.
Finally...
She smiled.
A small, controlled smile.
"You've changed."
"So have you."
"No."
"I've simply stopped pretending."
She stepped closer.
"Is she worth losing everything?"
Ethan answered without hesitation.
"This isn't about Rosa."
"Then what is it?"
He looked toward the window, where the flashing lights of the news vans painted red and blue reflections across the glass.
"It's about doing the right thing."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"The right thing doesn't build empires."
"No."
"It builds character."
The words landed like a verdict.
Victoria turned and walked away before he could see the tears gathering in her eyes.
She wasn't crying because she had lost an argument.
She was crying because she finally understood.
She could still marry Ethan.
She could force the wedding to happen.
She could silence reporters.
Hide the DNA report.
Delay the truth.
But she could never make him love her the way he was already beginning to love the child he didn't even know was his.
Downstairs...
Lily stood by the kitchen window holding Button.
She watched the flashing cameras beyond the gates.
"Mama?"
"Yes?"
"Why are they taking pictures of our house?"
Rosa knelt beside her.
"Sometimes grown-ups forget how to be kind."
Lily thought carefully.
Then asked,
"Will Mister Ethan be okay?"
Rosa smiled sadly.
"I hope so."
Lily hugged Button tightly.
"I don't want anyone to make him sad."
Unseen by either of them, Ethan had paused outside the kitchen door.
He heard every word.
He closed his eyes.
Somewhere deep inside...
A feeling he had resisted for days finally found a name.
It wasn't curiosity.
It wasn't coincidence.
It was protection.
The kind that came without logic.
Without permission.
The kind a father feels before he even knows he is one.
And upstairs, Victoria unlocked her safe.
She removed the DNA report once more.
This time...
Instead of hiding it away...
She stared at it for a very long time.
Then she whispered into the empty room,
"If I can't have the future I planned..."
May you like
"...then no one will."
