CHAPTER 9: THE HUNT BEGINS

CHAPTER 9: THE HUNT BEGINS

The first sign that Damien Blackwood was no longer playing by the rules was the silence.

For three days, he disappeared.

No interviews.

No public statements.

No angry messages.

No desperate attempts to regain his reputation.

Nothing.

And that frightened Agent Thomas Reed more than any threat Damien had ever made.

Because Damien Blackwood was many things.

Arrogant.

Controlling.

Cruel.

But he was never passive.

A man like Damien did not accept defeat quietly.

He planned.

He waited.

He calculated.

And when he finally moved

Someone always paid the price.

The investigation office was filled with tension.

Agents moved between desks carrying files.

Phones rang constantly.

Screens displayed information about Damien’s movements, financial records, and known connections.

But every lead ended the same way.

A dead end.

“He’s gone completely off the grid,” Agent Reed said.

Richard stood beside him.

“What does that mean?”

Reed looked at the screen.

“It means he prepared for this.”

Richard’s expression darkened.

“He knew this could happen?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Reed hesitated.

Then answered:

“Probably years.”

Emma sat across the room listening.

That answer bothered her.

Years.

The idea that Damien had planned for failure was terrifying.

Because it meant everything had been calculated.

The marriage.

The control.

The image.

The lies.

She thought about the document found beneath the mansion.

The one revealing that Damien had chosen her.

Not by accident.

Not because of love.

Because she fit into a plan.

A question had haunted her ever since.

Why me?

Agent Reed approached.

“Emma.”

She looked up.

“Yes?”

“There is something you need to know.”

Richard immediately became protective.

“What?”

Reed looked serious.

“We found evidence that Damien had been tracking you before your marriage.”

Emma froze.

The room became silent.

“How long before?”

“Almost a year.”

Her face changed.

A year.

Before the wedding.

Before she knew him.

Before she trusted him.

“He was watching me?”

Reed nodded.

“We believe so.”

Richard clenched his fists.

“He planned this from the beginning.”

Emma looked down.

For years, she thought she had made the mistake of choosing the wrong man.

But now she understood.

Damien had chosen her.

And that realization was somehow worse.

The next discovery came from Damien’s financial records.

A hidden property.

Not registered under his name.

Not connected to Blackwood Industries.

A place nobody knew existed.

Agent Reed studied the information.

“Where is it?”

A technician answered.

“A remote location outside the city.”

Richard frowned.

“Why hide a property?”

Reed looked at the file.

“Because people hide things where they believe nobody will look.”

Emma stared at the address.

She felt a strange sense of recognition.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Emma pointed at the document.

“That name.”

Reed looked.

The property was listed under a company.

Whitestone Holdings.

Emma’s face became pale.

“I have heard that name before.”

“Where?”

“Damien mentioned it once.”

Richard looked concerned.

“What did he say?”

Emma closed her eyes.

Trying to remember.

“He said it was where he kept things that mattered.”

The room went quiet.

Things that mattered.

Coming from Damien

Those words felt dangerous.

The team moved immediately.

The property was abandoned from the outside.

Old gates.

Broken fences.

No signs of activity.

But Agent Reed knew better.

People like Damien did not create secret places without reason.

They entered carefully.

The building was small.

Almost disappointing.

Nothing like the Blackwood mansion.

But inside

They found the truth.

The first room contained documents.

The second contained equipment.

The third contained photographs.

Hundreds of photographs.

Emma.

Richard.

Her friends.

People from her old life.

Everyone.

Emma stood frozen.

“He was watching everyone.”

Reed looked around.

“This was not just surveillance.”

“What was it?”

“A backup plan.”

They found files organized by names.

Each person had a folder.

Each folder contained information.

Weaknesses.

Habits.

Personal details.

Ways to manipulate them.

Richard opened his own folder.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”

He did not answer.

Emma took the file.

Inside were notes about Richard.

His business.

His relationships.

His fears.

And one sentence written by Damien.

“Richard Carter is the only obstacle.”

Emma felt sick.

“He considered you an obstacle.”

Richard closed the file.

“He always did.”

Then they found something else.

A video recording.

The date was from two months before the wedding.

Agent Reed played it.

The screen showed Damien.

Younger.

Confident.

Sitting in his office.

Talking to someone off-camera.

Emma held her breath.

“I have found the solution.”

Damien’s voice came through the speakers.

“She has the right personality.”

A pause.

“She trusts easily.”

Emma felt cold.

“She believes people can change.”

Damien smiled.

“She will not fight at first.”

Nobody in the room moved.

Because they were hearing the truth from Damien himself.

“I do not need someone powerful.”

“I need someone who believes love can fix anything.”

The video ended.

Emma walked away from the screen.

She could barely breathe.

All those years.

Every apology.

Every promise.

Every moment she wondered if she had failed him.

It was all part of his plan.

Richard followed her.

“Emma.”

She shook her head.

“I feel stupid.”

“No.”

“I believed him.”

Richard grabbed her shoulders.

“You believed someone because you had a good heart.”

She looked at him.

“He used that.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But that does not make your kindness a weakness.”

That night, Damien made his first mistake.

He contacted someone.

Someone who had been silent for years.

A former employee.

A person who knew where Damien was hiding.

The message was simple.

I NEED YOUR HELP.

The reply came hours later.

WHY SHOULD I HELP YOU?

Damien stared at the screen.

Then typed:

BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE BETRAY ME.

The response did not come immediately.

But when it did

It changed everything.

THAT WAS BEFORE.

Damien stared.

Before.

The word annoyed him.

Because everyone was suddenly acting as if he was powerless.

As if he was no longer the same man.

He typed one final message.

REMEMBER WHO GAVE YOU EVERYTHING.

The answer came instantly.

REMEMBER WHO TOOK EVERYTHING AWAY.

Damien threw the phone across the room.

The investigation team tracked the communication.

Not enough for an arrest.

But enough for a location.

A small town several hours away.

Reed gathered his team.

“We move tonight.”

Richard looked at him.

“Do you think he is there?”

Reed answered honestly.

“I think he wants us to think he is.”

Emma looked at the evidence.

The videos.

The files.

The photographs.

She understood Damien better now.

He was not running.

He was creating another game.

Before leaving, Emma found one final document in the hidden property.

A handwritten note.

Not from Damien.

From someone else.

The handwriting was old.

The name at the bottom made her stop breathing.

Lillian Blackwood.

Damien’s mother.

Emma read the first sentence.

And her blood ran cold.

“If anyone finds this, it means Damien has become exactly what I feared.”

She turned the page.

The next words were worse.

“My son did not become cruel because he was powerful.”

“He became powerful because he learned cruelty.”

Richard looked at her.

“What does it say?”

Emma slowly lowered the paper.

“It says we have been looking at the wrong beginning.”

Reed stepped closer.

“What do you mean?”

Emma looked toward the darkness outside.

“The mansion was not where Damien’s story started.”

A pause.

“It started somewhere else.”

Hours later, the team arrived at the suspected location.

The building was empty.

No Damien.

No evidence.

Nothing.

At first, it looked like another dead end.

Until Agent Reed noticed something.

A light flashing inside.

A hidden camera.

Someone was watching them.

Then every screen in the building turned on.

Damien appeared.

Smiling.

“Congratulations.”

Everyone froze.

“You found my hiding place.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Where are you?”

Damien smiled wider.

“That is the wrong question.”

Emma stared at the screen.

“What do you want?”

Damien looked directly at her.

And even through the camera

She felt the old darkness.

“I want you to understand something, Emma.”

A pause.

“You think you escaped from me.”

The screen flickered.

“But you still do not know who I really am.”

The video ended.

The room went black.

And somewhere far away

Damien Blackwood watched the darkness around him.

The hunt had begun.

May you like

But he was not the one being hunted anymore.

He had just turned the game around.
