Chapter 1: The Sound That Broke the Moment
The sudden crash echoed through the empty street like a gunshot.
Both girls flinched.
From the doorway of an abandoned shop, a man stepped out—middle-aged, wearing a worn security uniform too thin for the cold. His eyes weren’t angry at first. They were confused… then hard.
“What do you think you’re doing?” he barked.
The girl in the camel coat instinctively tightened her arms around the starving child.
“I’m just sharing food,” she said quietly.
“On private property,” the man snapped. “Move along. Now.”
The wind picked up, slicing through the silence again. The homeless girl tried to pull herself away, embarrassed, but the coat girl didn’t let go.
“I’ll go,” the coat girl said, standing up slowly, “but she needs help. She hasn’t eaten in days.”
The man hesitated for a fraction of a second. His gaze dropped to the half loaf of bread, then to the trembling child.
Something flickered in his face—but it disappeared quickly.
“I said leave.”
The coat girl looked down at her friend, then made a decision.
“Come with me,” she whispered.
