Chapter 2: The Daughter No One Knew

Chapter 2: The Daughter No One Knew
No one moved.
The silence inside the Sterling Royal Hotel lasted so long that the soft crackle of the fireplace became the loudest sound in the ballroom.
More than two hundred guests stared at Adrian Sterling as if they had forgotten how to breathe.
His daughter.
The words echoed through every corner of the grand hall.
Vanessa Cole's face had turned completely white.
She looked from Adrian to Emily, then back again, desperately searching for some sign that this was another cruel misunderstanding.
"There has to be..." she whispered, "...another explanation."
"There isn't," Adrian replied.
His voice remained calm, but those who knew him recognized the warning beneath it. Adrian Sterling never raised his voice when he was truly angry.
Emily stood frozen beneath his jacket, her hands trembling as she tried to hold the torn fabric together.
She wished the marble floor would open and swallow her whole.
For ten years she had lived quietly, hidden from cameras and gossip columns.
Tonight had been the first time her father asked her to stand beside him.
She already regretted saying yes.
Across the ballroom, dozens of reporters hurried to send messages to their editors.
"Adrian Sterling has a daughter."
"Where has she been?"
"Who is her mother?"
"Why has nobody ever heard of her?"
Within seconds, social media exploded.
The live broadcast had reached millions of viewers.
The clip of Vanessa tearing Emily's dress spread across the internet faster than anyone could stop it.
Vanessa slowly stepped forward.
"Adrian..."
Her voice cracked.
"You told me..."
"I told you there were parts of my past I wasn't ready to discuss."
"You never said you had a child."
"No."
"I didn't."
His eyes never left Emily.
"I was protecting her."
Vanessa's heart sank.
"For ten years?"
"For eleven."
Emily quietly spoke for the first time.
"Dad..."
The single word silenced the room again.
Vanessa felt as though someone had struck her across the face.
Emily really was his daughter.
Not adopted.
Not pretending.
Not lying.
"Dad," Emily whispered again, "I want to leave."
Adrian looked down at her.
"You've done nothing wrong."
"But everyone is staring."
He gently brushed a tear from her cheek.
"Let them stare."
She shook her head.
"I can't."
Without waiting for another answer, Emily turned and hurried toward the ballroom doors.
"Emily!"
Adrian called after her.
She didn't stop.
The heavy doors swung open.
She disappeared into the hotel corridor.
Adrian immediately followed.
Ignoring the reporters.
Ignoring the executives.
Ignoring Vanessa.
The ballroom remained silent long after both of them had gone.
Outside...
Cold autumn air greeted Emily as she stepped onto the hotel terrace.
The city lights shimmered across the river below.
She wrapped Adrian's jacket tighter around herself.
A moment later, the doors opened behind her.
"I'm sorry," Adrian said softly.
Emily kept looking at the skyline.
"I knew this would happen."
"No, you didn't."
"I knew people would hate me."
Adrian stood beside her.
"They don't know you."
"They don't have to."
She laughed bitterly.
"They've already decided who I am."
He remained quiet.
After a long silence, Emily asked the question she had carried for years.
"Was bringing me here a mistake?"
Adrian answered without hesitation.
"No."
"But maybe..."
He sighed.
"...I chose the wrong night."
Back inside the ballroom...
Vanessa stood completely alone.
The guests who had surrounded her only minutes earlier now kept their distance.
Even her closest friends avoided eye contact.
Finally, an elderly woman approached.
Margaret Holloway, one of the Sterling family's oldest friends.
She looked at Vanessa with disappointment rather than anger.
"Do you know why everyone is silent?"
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
"Because you didn't embarrass yourself tonight."
Margaret glanced toward the terrace doors.
"You embarrassed a young woman whose only crime was existing."
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"I didn't know."
"No."
Margaret nodded.
"You didn't."
"But you never stopped to ask."
Meanwhile...
On the opposite side of the city...
Inside a dark office overlooking Manhattan...
A television replayed the gala.
A gray-haired man watched every second without blinking.
Especially the moment Adrian announced Emily's identity.
He smiled.
"So..."
He whispered.
"She's finally come home."
A younger man entered the office.
"Sir?"
The older man pointed at the screen.
"Find her."
"Alive?"
The man smiled faintly.
"Of course."
His eyes darkened.
"For now."
Back at the hotel...
Adrian led Emily into a private lounge away from the reporters.
His personal assistant arrived carrying another dress.
Emily looked at it but didn't move.
"I don't want another gown."
"I know."
"I want to go home."
Adrian nodded.
"We will."
She finally looked at him.
"Why tonight?"
He knew what she really meant.
Why reveal me now?
He walked to the window.
"Because someone already knows you're alive."
Emily felt a chill.
"What?"
He turned slowly.
"Three weeks ago..."
He opened a small envelope from his jacket pocket.
Inside was a photograph.
Emily sleeping in her apartment.
Taken through a window.
Her smile disappeared.
"Who took that?"
"I don't know."
"But they also sent a message."
He unfolded a handwritten note.
Only six words were written across the paper.
Bring her home... or we will.
Emily stared at the note.
Her hands began to shake.
"You mean..."
"I've hidden you for eleven years."
Adrian's expression grew darker than she had ever seen.
"And somehow..."
He folded the letter carefully.
"...someone finally found you."
Outside the hotel, camera flashes illuminated the night.
Inside the private lounge, father and daughter stood in silence, realizing that the greatest danger had never been the scandal in the ballroom.
It was the invisible enemy who had waited patiently for more than a decade.
And now...
May you like
The hunt had begun.
