Chapter 1: The Ring Was Never About the Diamond

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Victoria's smile slowly disappeared.

"What key?" she demanded.

Elena gently rested a hand over her stomach and looked toward Julian.

"Tell her."

Julian closed his eyes for a moment before speaking.

"The diamond wasn't the valuable part."

Confused murmurs spread through the guests.

Elena reached into her handbag and removed a slim envelope.

"The engagement ring contained a microscopic encrypted storage chip hidden beneath the center stone."

Gasps echoed around the room.

"It held the only offline access key to the Sterling Family Trust."

Victoria's face turned pale.

Impossible.

She had personally insisted the family fortune be protected through multiple encrypted systems after a cyberattack years earlier.

One master recovery key had been embedded inside the engagement ring as a safeguard.

Only she, Julian, and the family's attorney knew it existed.
