Chapter 2: The Envelope

Chapter 2: The Envelope

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Victoria Hayes stared at the envelope as if it were a loaded weapon.

Richard Hayes, her husband, slowly turned toward her.

"Victoria... answer the question."

She forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous. Emma's bluffing."

Emma calmly wiped the wine from her face with a linen napkin.

"If I'm bluffing," she said softly, "then you won't mind if Richard opens the envelope."

Victoria's hands trembled.

"No."

That single word was enough to make everyone suspicious.

Richard picked up the envelope before she could stop him.

Inside were several photographs, copies of hotel security logs, and a flash drive.

The first photograph showed Victoria entering the Grand Crescent Hotel late Friday night.

The second showed her meeting privately with Daniel Cross—the financial director of the Hayes Foundation.

Richard frowned.

"I thought Daniel was in Chicago."

Emma nodded.

"So did everyone else."

The ballroom projector suddenly lit up.

Emma's attorney connected the flash drive.

Security footage appeared on the massive screen.

Victoria and Daniel entered a private conference suite carrying briefcases.

Three hours later, they left with only one.

Guests exchanged uneasy glances.

Emma wasn't finished.

"The meeting wasn't about an affair," she said.

"It was about money."

Another document appeared.

Millions of dollars donated to children's hospitals had quietly disappeared over the last three years.

Every transfer had been approved using Victoria's digital authorization.

Richard looked at his wife in disbelief.

"You stole from sick children?"

Victoria remained silent.

That silence spoke louder than any confession.

Then Emma revealed the final document.

"The forensic accountants finished their report yesterday."

She slid it across the table.

"Every missing dollar leads back to you."
