Chapter 14 â The Family They Stole

Chapter 14 â The Family They Stole
The leather journal rested on the library table long after midnight.
No one reached for it.
Not Daniel.
Not Elena.
Not Angela.
For years, they had fought to uncover the truth.
Now that it lay before them...
They feared what it might cost.
The grandfather clock chimed once.
Daniel finally broke the silence.
"My father never wrote anything unless he believed it mattered."
He ran his fingers across the worn leather cover.
"If he left this hidden..."
"...he wanted someone to find it only after everything else had fallen apart."
Elena nodded.
"Then it's time."
Daniel slowly opened the journal.
William Hawthorne's Letter
The first page wasn't a diary.
It was a letter.
Written in neat blue ink.
To my son, Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect our family.
Daniel swallowed hard.
He continued reading aloud.
I built Hawthorne Industries believing success could solve every problem.
I was wrong.
Money can build hospitals.
It can build schools.
But it cannot replace time with the people you love.
The room remained silent.
Even Noah and Ethan, sitting together on the sofa, listened without moving.
Daniel turned another page.
Victoria was not always the woman history will remember.
She laughed often.
She loved fiercely.
She dreamed of raising a family that would never know hunger or fear.
Somewhere along the way, she began protecting the empire more than the people inside it.
Angela quietly wiped away a tear.
Mrs. Brooks lowered her eyes.
No one argued.
The Hidden Confession
Several pages later, Daniel stopped.
His hands trembled.
"What is it?"
Elena asked.
He looked up.
"My father knew."
"Knew what?"
Daniel handed her the journal.
One paragraph had been underlined.
Claire came to me three weeks before my death.
She believed someone inside the company was moving money illegally.
She feared Victoria would choose reputation over justice.
I promised her I would expose everything myself.
I was too late.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"So Dad believed Claire."
"He always did."
Angela whispered.
Ethan's Memory Returns
The room remained quiet until Ethan suddenly stood.
"I remember something."
Every face turned toward him.
"It wasn't just Grandpa."
He looked at Daniel.
"The day he collapsed..."
"...Mom told me to hide."
Daniel frowned.
"Hide where?"
"In Grandpa's study."
"I climbed inside the secret cabinet."
Elena exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"The cabinet behind the bookshelf?"
Ethan nodded.
"I stayed there."
"I heard people talking."
"What did they say?"
The boy squeezed Noah's hand.
"I heard Grandma crying."
"But she wasn't alone."
"There was another man."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Who?"
"I couldn't see him."
"But..."
Ethan closed his eyes, forcing himself to remember.
"He kept saying..."
"'The transfers must continue.'"
"'No one can know about Blackwood Holdings.'"
The room fell silent.
Richard Collins had never mentioned Blackwood Holdings.
Neither had Daniel.
Elena looked toward Special Agent Ellis.
The FBI agent frowned immediately.
"I've heard that name."
"You have?"
"It appeared once."
"In a deleted financial ledger."
"We couldn't trace it."
Daniel slowly stood.
"My father hid the journal."
"What if Blackwood Holdings is what he wanted us to find?"
A Visit to Victoria
The next morning, Daniel and Elena visited Victoria at the federal detention center.
She looked exhausted.
The elegance remained.
The confidence did not.
Daniel placed the journal on the table between them.
"Dad left this."
Victoria stared at the familiar leather cover.
"I wondered if you'd ever find it."
"You knew where it was?"
She nodded.
"I never touched it."
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid."
Daniel looked at her.
"You?"
"For once..."
"...yes."
He opened the journal to the underlined page.
"Who is Blackwood Holdings?"
Victoria's face changed.
Not with guilt.
With dread.
"You found that name."
"Answer me."
She looked toward the security camera before speaking softly.
"It wasn't my company."
"It belonged to someone else."
"Who?"
Victoria hesitated.
Then whispered,
"The Ashcroft family."
Daniel frowned.
"Our biggest competitors?"
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"Our partners."
The Family They Stole
Victoria looked at Ethan.
Then Noah.
Finally at Daniel.
"There is something none of you understand."
"Your father wasn't trying to save Hawthorne Industries."
"He was trying to save this family."
Daniel's voice sharpened.
"What does that mean?"
She folded her trembling hands.
"When William discovered the illegal transfers..."
"...he learned they weren't simply stealing money."
"They were buying people."
Elena frowned.
"Buying people?"
"Judges."
"Politicians."
"Executives."
"Entire companies."
She paused.
"And children."
The room froze.
Victoria continued.
"The Ashcroft network funded illegal adoptions."
"They changed identities."
"They erased birth records."
"They sold children to wealthy families across the world."
Angela covered her mouth.
"My God..."
Victoria looked directly at Ethan.
"When you disappeared..."
"I wasn't hiding you from Daniel."
"I was hiding you from them."
Silence.
Daniel stared at his mother.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I know what I deserve."
She answered quietly.
"But this is the truth."
"The Ashcrofts believed Ethan had seen documents connecting them to Blackwood Holdings."
"They wanted him."
"So you locked him away?"
"I kept him somewhere no one outside this estate could reach."
Daniel shook his head in disbelief.
"You should have trusted me."
"I should have."
Victoria whispered.
"But after Claire died..."
"...I trusted no one."
The Final Name
Special Agent Ellis' phone vibrated.
He answered.
His expression darkened.
"What happened?"
Daniel asked.
Ellis lowered the phone.
"Our cyber unit recovered encrypted files from Hawthorne Industries."
"And?"
"They confirm Blackwood Holdings existed."
The room grew tense.
"But that's not the biggest discovery."
He looked directly at Daniel.
"The transfers didn't stop five years ago."
"They're still happening."
"Who's running them now?"
Ellis took a slow breath.
"The records were signed last week."
He placed a printed document on the table.
One signature appeared at the bottom.
Not Victoria Hawthorne.
Not Richard Collins.
A name no one in the room expected.
Jonathan Ashcroft.
Daniel's face went pale.
"The chairman of Ashcroft Global..."
Ellis nodded.
"And according to the evidence..."
"...the man responsible for Claire's murder may never have been inside your family."
As they left the detention center, Elena looked back through the reinforced glass.
Victoria remained seated alone.
For the first time, she looked less like a fallen queen...
And more like a mother who had made unforgivable choices while fighting an enemy she never fully defeated.
Outside, Daniel stared at the horizon.
"This was never just about the Hawthornes."
Elena nodded.
"No."
"It's much bigger."
Daniel folded the journal beneath his arm.
"Then we're not finished."
Far from it.
Because the family they had fought so hard to save...
Had been caught in a war that stretched far beyond the walls of the Hawthorne estate.
And somewhere...
Jonathan Ashcroft was already preparing his next move.
