PART 2 — The Photo That Shouldn’t Exist

PART 2 — The Photo That Shouldn’t Exist
Christopher didn’t open the envelope right away.
His hands were steady.
That was the most terrifying part.
Emma was still clinging to him, soaked and shaking, her small fingers digging into his shirt like the world might drop her again if she loosened her grip.
Behind them, Juliette was still screaming as security dragged her across the courtyard.
But Christopher wasn’t listening anymore.
Not to her.
Not to the guards.
Not even to the chaos.
He slid the red-sealed envelope open.
And pulled out a single photograph.
At first, his expression didn’t change.
Then the color drained from his face so completely it looked like something had been erased from him.
Emma felt it immediately.
“Daddy?” she whispered.
He didn’t answer.
Because in the photo—
was Emma.
Older.
Sitting in a hospital bed.
Connected to machines.
And beside her…
Juliette.
Not screaming.
Not fighting.
Smiling.
Christopher’s grip tightened.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Yvette stepped back.
“I didn’t want you to find that one first,” she said quietly.
Christopher turned the photo over.
On the back, written in Estelle Pierce’s unmistakable handwriting:
“If the child survives past seven, the inheritance clause activates fully. She must not reach that age in control of her own identity.”
Christopher’s breath stopped.
“This isn’t about money,” he said slowly.
Yvette’s silence answered him.

Then she added:
“It never was.”
