Part 4: Learning to Trust Again

Part 4: Learning to Trust Again
The mansion was sold six months later.
Richard bought a smaller home near Sophie's school.
There were no grand staircases.
No ballroom.
No staff quarters.
Just a bright kitchen, a backyard with a swing, and a dining table where every meal was shared together.
The first week, Sophie still asked the same question before touching her food.
"May I have some?"
Richard always gave the same answer.
"You never have to ask for permission to eat in this house."
At first, she looked uncertain.
Then, little by little, she believed him.
She stopped hiding snacks beneath her pillow.
She stopped flinching whenever someone entered the room unexpectedly.
She laughed more.
Slept through the night.
And one evening, while they baked cookies together, she quietly slipped her small hand into his.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"I don't feel scared in the kitchen anymore."
Richard smiled through tears.
"Neither do I."
Healing didn't happen all at once.
It happened one safe meal...
May you like
One bedtime story...
One quiet promise kept at a time.
