Chapter 1: The Wedding That Ended Before It Began

Chapter 1: The Wedding That Ended Before It Began

The ballroom was wrapped in silence.

Hundreds of guests stared as Ethan Carter gently placed his arm around his crying mother.

Margaret clutched the bouquet of red roses against her chest, her hands trembling.

"They were for her," she whispered through tears.

Ethan looked at the woman who was supposed to become his wife.

Claire stood frozen in her expensive wedding gown, her breathing uneven.

"I... I didn't mean..."

"You screamed at my mother in front of everyone," Ethan interrupted.

Claire's eyes filled with panic.

"She touched my dress. I thought she was trying to ruin it."

Margaret immediately shook her head.

"There was a loose pin near your shoulder," she said softly. "I only wanted to fix it before the photographs."

She slowly opened her hand.

A tiny silver pin lay in her palm.

The room gasped.

Claire's face turned white.

Everything Margaret had done had been an act of love.

Nothing more.

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"My mother spent six months arranging today's wedding."

He looked around the ballroom.

"She chose the flowers."

"The music."

"The menu."

"And those roses..."

He gently took the bouquet from Margaret.

"...were her gift to welcome you into our family."

Claire burst into tears.

"I'm sorry."

But Ethan's expression never changed.

"An apology cannot erase the way you made her feel."

Without another word, he walked his mother out of the ballroom.

The orchestra stopped playing.

The guests remained seated in complete silence.

No one had ever seen a wedding end like this.
