CHAPTER 1 — The Evidence in the Cup

CHAPTER 1 — The Evidence in the Cup

I didn’t move right away.

The kitchen felt different now—like the air itself had thickened, watching me decide what kind of man I was about to become.

Mara stood near the stairs, arms tense at her sides.

“I didn’t want to open it further,” she said quietly. “I thought you should see it first.”

I looked down at the sealed bag again.

The blue chocolate cup—Noah’s favorite—looked harmless at first glance. A child’s comfort item. Something innocent enough to ignore.

But innocence doesn’t leave black fragments behind.

“Did Noah say anything else before we left?” I asked.

Mara hesitated.

Then she shook her head. “Only that it felt like something was moving inside him… matching what he ate.”

My stomach tightened.

Celeste’s voice drifted again from upstairs, sweeter this time.

“Daniel? Noah’s asleep. I think he needs you to read to him tonight.”

Perfect timing. Too perfect.

I handed Mara the bag back. “Don’t tell her you gave this to me.”

Her eyes widened. “You think she—”

“I don’t think,” I said. “I know someone is lying. I just don’t know how yet.”

I walked upstairs.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Noah lay in bed, curled like a broken question. His breathing was uneven, but calmer than before. When he saw me, his eyes filled instantly.

“Dad…” he whispered. “It’s still there. Just quieter.”

I sat beside him.

“I believe you,” I said.

And I meant it.

From the doorway, Celeste watched us. Her expression was soft—but her eyes flicked to my hands, searching.

May you like

For what I had seen.

For what I now knew.
