Chapter 6 – Hidden Cameras

Chapter 6 – Hidden Cameras

Rain pounded against the roof of the abandoned chapel.

Each drop echoed through the empty stone building like the ticking of a clock counting down to something inevitable.

Emily stood near the shattered stained-glass window, watching the gray skies beyond the cemetery.

She couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching them.

Not hope.

Not instinct.

Experience.

Detective Nathan Reeves noticed her expression.

"What is it?"

Emily didn't turn around.

"We've been here too long."

"We're surrounded by officers."

"They won't matter."

Reeves frowned.

"You really think they'll attack a police-secured location?"

Emily looked at him.

"They attacked a billionaire's mansion in broad daylight."

"They poisoned a wedding with four hundred witnesses."

"They killed an undercover FBI agent."

She paused.

"They're not afraid of police."

Alexander slipped Margaret's letter back into his inside pocket.

"So what do we do?"

Emily answered without hesitation.

"We stop reacting."

"We make them react."

Reeves studied her.

"You have something in mind."

She nodded.

"The wedding."

Reeves frowned.

"What about it?"

Emily looked directly at him.

"The cameras."

Twenty minutes later...

A police convoy quietly left the chapel.

Instead of returning to headquarters, Reeves headed straight back to the Grand Windsor Hotel.

Crime-scene tape still surrounded the ballroom.

CSI technicians continued collecting evidence beneath the massive crystal chandeliers.

The celebration had vanished.

Only silence remained.

Hotel manager Harold Benton rushed toward them.

"Detective."

"You came back."

Reeves got straight to the point.

"I need every security recording."

Harold looked confused.

"We already gave your team everything."

Emily quietly spoke.

"No."

"You gave them what survived."

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

"Luxury hotels never rely on one camera system."

Harold blinked.

"What?"

"There are backups."

The manager hesitated.

"Well..."

"There is an internal archive."

Reeves folded his arms.

"Show me."

They descended two floors beneath the hotel into a secure surveillance center.

Rows of monitors covered one wall.

A young technician greeted them nervously.

"We've already copied all footage for the police."

Emily slowly walked around the room.

Her eyes scanned every monitor.

Every cable.

Every hard drive.

Then she smiled.

"You're missing one server."

The technician froze.

"What?"

Emily pointed toward a locked steel cabinet hidden behind a rack of equipment.

Harold looked surprised.

"I forgot that existed."

The technician shifted uncomfortably.

"It's only for VIP events."

Emily nodded.

"Exactly."

Reeves' voice hardened.

"Open it."

The technician hesitated.

"I'll need authorization."

Reeves quietly placed his badge on the table.

"This is your authorization."

Five minutes later...

The hidden server powered on.

Another timeline appeared.

Not the public security system.

A completely different network.

Thirty-six additional cameras.

Invisible to ordinary staff.

Installed specifically for presidential visits, celebrity weddings, and high-profile events.

Harold whispered,

"I completely forgot these were active."

Emily quietly replied,

"They didn't."

The footage began playing.

10:41 PM.

Guests entering.

Musicians tuning instruments.

Waiters arranging champagne.

Everything appeared ordinary.

Then—

Camera Twenty-Two.

A hallway leading toward the service elevators.

Emily suddenly pointed.

"Stop."

The technician froze the frame.

A waiter walked toward the ballroom carrying a silver tray.

Nothing unusual.

Except...

He wasn't wearing brown loafers.

He was wearing standard hotel shoes.

Alexander frowned.

"That's not him."

Emily nodded.

"No."

She pointed farther back.

Near the end of the hallway.

Almost hidden in the shadows.

Another man.

Watching.

Reeves leaned closer.

"Zoom."

The image sharpened.

The man wore a dark business suit.

No hotel uniform.

No guest badge.

His face remained partially hidden beneath the brim of a black hat.

But one detail stood out immediately.

White gloves.

Inside a hotel.

Emily whispered,

"That's him."

Alexander looked confused.

"The poisoner?"

"No."

She slowly shook her head.

"The supervisor."

The footage continued.

The suited man never touched the champagne.

Never approached the guests.

He simply watched the waiter carrying the tray.

Then...

He tapped his wristwatch once.

The waiter nodded.

And disappeared toward the ballroom.

Reeves replayed the clip three times.

"Communication without speaking."

Emily nodded.

"They've worked together before."

The detective immediately ordered facial recognition.

Minutes later...

Nothing.

No match.

The man officially didn't exist.

Laura Kim entered the surveillance room carrying another evidence bag.

"We found this in the ballroom."

She carefully removed a tiny black object.

Barely larger than a coin.

Alexander frowned.

"What is it?"

Laura smiled grimly.

"A hidden camera."

Silence.

Reeves looked up sharply.

"Where?"

"Under the head table."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I knew it."

Laura placed the device beside the monitor.

"It wasn't installed by the hotel."

"Professional equipment."

"Wireless."

"Military-grade encryption."

Alexander frowned.

"They recorded my wedding?"

Laura corrected him.

"They recorded your murder."

The room fell silent.

Someone hadn't simply wanted Alexander dead.

Someone had wanted proof.

Emily suddenly looked toward the technician.

"Can that camera transmit?"

He nodded.

"If the receiver's nearby."

"How nearby?"

"Within three miles."

Reeves immediately turned.

"Search every rooftop."

"Every nearby building."

"Every parked surveillance van."

Officers rushed from the room.

Meanwhile...

Emily continued reviewing footage.

Another angle.

Another hallway.

Another clue.

She suddenly froze again.

"Wait."

Camera Nine.

Kitchen corridor.

10:48 PM.

Exactly six minutes before the toast.

The brown-loafer waiter entered the kitchen.

But...

He wasn't alone.

He passed directly beside...

Emily.

Alexander looked at her.

"You were right there."

Emily nodded.

"I remember."

Reeves frowned.

"Then why didn't you stop him?"

Emily replayed the footage herself.

"Because..."

She pointed toward the screen.

"Look behind me."

Everyone leaned closer.

A woman pushed a housekeeping cart down the corridor.

Ordinary.

Invisible.

Until she looked directly into the hidden camera.

Only for a second.

Long enough for Emily to recognize her.

Her breathing stopped.

"No..."

Alexander looked at her.

"What?"

Emily whispered,

"That's Eleanor."

The elderly housekeeper disappeared around the corner.

Seconds later...

The poisoner followed.

Then the footage abruptly ended.

Static.

Black screen.

Signal lost.

The technician frowned.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

"Someone manually disconnected the feed."

"When?"

He checked the logs.

"Exactly twenty-three seconds later."

Emily stared at the frozen image of Eleanor.

Alive.

Inside the hotel.

On the night of the wedding.

She had promised never to come out of hiding.

Yet somehow...

She had been there.

Watching.

Reeves immediately grabbed his phone.

"I want every frame enhanced."

"Track the housekeeper."

"Find where she entered."

"Find where she left."

The technician typed rapidly.

"I already am."

Another pause.

Then...

"I found her."

Everyone looked at the monitor.

Camera Three.

Employee exit.

11:07 PM.

Eleanor calmly pushed her housekeeping cart into the loading dock.

A white delivery van waited.

She loaded the cart inside.

Closed the doors.

Drove away.

Laura smiled.

"We have the license plate."

The technician's smile disappeared almost instantly.

"No..."

"What?"

"The plate belongs to another vehicle."

Emily sighed.

"Of course."

Then...

Another surprise.

A second hidden camera activated automatically.

Unlike the others, this one had no video.

Only audio.

The technician pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

One belonged to the poisoner.

The other...

Made Emily's blood run cold.

"You failed."

"I'm sorry."

"You weren't supposed to kill the agent."

"He drank the champagne."

Silence.

Then the second voice spoke again.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

"No mistakes next time."

Alexander frowned.

"I know that voice."

Reeves slowly looked at him.

"Who is it?"

Alexander's face turned pale.

He whispered only two words.

"My father."

Silence filled the surveillance room.

Edward Hawthorne.

The man who had just admitted raising Alexander as his own.

The man who had cried over Margaret's diary.

The man who claimed to have spent twenty-two years searching for the truth.

His voice...

Had just been captured giving orders to a professional assassin.

Emily stared at the speaker.

She wanted to say it was impossible.

That there had to be another explanation.

But deep inside...

She remembered something Eleanor had told her years ago.

Never trust the first victim.

Sometimes... they're standing closest to the killer.

The hidden cameras had revealed more than a poisoning.

May you like

They had shattered the last person Alexander still believed he could trust.
