The woman calmly closed the document holder.
"My name is Evelyn Ashcroft."
"I rarely introduce myself."
"I prefer people to introduce themselves through their actions."
She looked directly at the salesman.
"And today..."
"You did."
The regional director arrived minutes later.
Then Human Resources.
Then the company's executive vice president.
The entire leadership team had been summoned.
The manager explained everything.
No one interrupted.
When he finished...
Evelyn asked only one question.
"How many customers have left this store because someone judged their appearance?"
No one had an answer.
Because no one had ever bothered to count.
The salesman stepped forward.
"I'm sorry."
She nodded.
"I believe you."
Hope appeared in his eyes.
Then she gently continued.
"But being sorry doesn't erase what you've normalized."
He lowered his head.
His employment was terminated that afternoon.
