Chapter 14 — The Price of Betrayal

Chapter 14 — The Price of Betrayal

The fire at Pier 44 was no longer behind us.

It was everywhere.

Flames climbed the warehouse walls.

Smoke swallowed the ceiling.

Sirens screamed somewhere beyond the docks.

And in the middle of it all stood Adrian Mercer, holding the original trust as calmly as if he were standing in a boardroom.

My uncle.

The man who had been erased from my family.

The man who had supposedly died before I was born.

The man who had just told me that, by tomorrow, Chicago would belong to him.

I stared at him through the smoke.

"You started the fire."

Adrian smiled.

"No."

He looked toward Gabriel.

"Your father did."

Gabriel's face hardened.

"Don't."

Adrian laughed.

"You still think you can protect him."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"I've spent twenty-seven years protecting him."

"And look where that got you."

Adrian raised the trust.

"He's standing in a burning warehouse, surrounded by people who lied to him his entire life."

His eyes found mine.

"That's your family's definition of protection."

I felt something inside me break.

Because he was right.

Everyone had lied.

Everyone had decided what I was allowed to know.

Everyone had called it protection.

And every lie had cost someone something.

Ewan lost six years.

Mara lost her childhood.

Celeste lost her freedom.

Gabriel lost his identity.

Elena lost her son.

And I had lost the ability to know whether any memory I had was real.

I looked at Adrian.

"So what's your price?"

His smile disappeared.

"My price?"

"Everyone wants something."

I stepped closer.

"What do you want from me?"

He held up the trust.

"I want what your family stole from mine."

The Man Who Was Erased

Adrian began walking through the smoke.

"Your grandfather created the first Bradley empire."

Gabriel shook his head.

"Don't rewrite history."

"I'm not."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"I'm correcting it."

He pointed at the burning warehouse.

"Your family built its fortune on my father's shipping routes."

Then he pointed at Gabriel.

"Your father took control."

Then at me.

"And when I tried to stop him, they erased me."

I stared.

"Why?"

"Because I refused to participate."

"In what?"

"The first trust."

I frowned.

Adrian explained.

"My father wanted one person to control everything."

"Who?"

"Me."

Gabriel looked away.

"But I refused."

"And they replaced you with Gabriel."

Adrian nodded.

"They made him the heir."

"Then why did they create me?"

"Because Gabriel refused that too."

I looked at my father.

He finally spoke.

"I didn't want any of it."

Adrian laughed.

"You didn't want the empire."

"No."

"You didn't want the money."

"No."

"You didn't want the power."

Gabriel looked at me.

"I wanted your mother."

Silence.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"And that was your greatest betrayal."

The Woman Between Two Brothers

Elena appeared through the smoke.

I hadn't heard her enter.

She looked at Gabriel.

Then Adrian.

Her face crumpled.

"Stop."

Both men stared at her.

Adrian smiled.

"There she is."

Gabriel moved toward her.

"Elena, leave."

She shook her head.

"I've been running for twenty-seven years."

Her eyes found mine.

"I'm tired."

I looked at her.

"Tell me everything."

She nodded.

"You deserve it."

Adrian lowered the trust.

"Tell him."

Elena took a breath.

"When I met Gabriel, I was already promised to Adrian."

I stared.

"What?"

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Elena continued.

"Adrian was the brilliant son."

"The one your grandfather wanted to inherit everything."

"Gabriel was the son who wanted nothing to do with the family."

She looked at Adrian.

"But I loved Gabriel."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"She betrayed me."

"I chose love."

"You chose him."

"I did."

"And then you became pregnant."

Elena nodded.

"With Connor."

I looked at Gabriel.

My father.

He didn't deny it.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"That was when everything changed."

The Child

Adrian explained.

"The family trust required a blood heir."

"But Gabriel wasn't the heir."

"No."

He looked at me.

"You were."

I remembered the photograph.

My mother holding me.

Gabriel beside her.

Evelyn behind them.

"Why did everyone want me?"

"Because your blood carried the Mercer line."

I frowned.

"Not Bradley."

"Correct."

Adrian stepped closer.

"The trust wasn't created for the Bradleys."

He held up the document.

"It was created for the Mercer family."

My heart stopped.

"Then why does everyone call it the Bradley trust?"

"Because your grandfather stole it."

"From whom?"

"From us."

I looked at Gabriel.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought keeping you away from the family would save you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Instead, everyone else raised me."

Gabriel's eyes filled with regret.

"I know."

"You let me think you were dead."

"I know."

"You let me hate you."

"I know."

"Why?"

His voice broke.

"Because I thought hatred was safer than love."

The Price of Celeste's Betrayal

A gunshot echoed.

Everyone froze.

Celeste stumbled through the smoke.

She was holding her shoulder.

I ran toward her.

"Celeste!"

"I'm fine."

Blood stained her coat.

"You were shot."

"Not badly."

She looked behind her.

"Nathaniel is coming."

I helped her stand.

Adrian watched.

"She betrayed me too."

Celeste looked at him.

"I never belonged to you."

"You were my daughter."

"You were my jailer."

His face hardened.

"I gave you everything."

"You gave me a cage."

She looked at me.

"And I was supposed to deliver you to it."

I swallowed.

"Why didn't you?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing you as a target."

I stared at her.

"What did you see?"

She whispered:

"A man who deserved to know the truth."

The Phone Call

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nathaniel's voice.

"You have ten minutes."

"For what?"

"Bring the trust."

"Why?"

"Because Adrian has something you want."

I looked at my uncle.

"What?"

"Your brother."

My blood ran cold.

I turned.

Ewan was gone.

I looked around the warehouse.

"Ewan?"

No answer.

Adrian smiled.

"You should have kept your eyes on him."

I grabbed Adrian by the collar.

"Where is my brother?"

He didn't resist.

"He's alive."

"Where?"

"At the old Bradley residence."

"Why?"

"Because that's where the final ceremony takes place."

"What ceremony?"

"The succession."

I released him.

"You're lying."

"No."

He pointed toward the trust.

"The document has already recognized you."

I stared.

"What happens tomorrow?"

Adrian's smile returned.

"You become the legal owner."

"And you?"

"I become the man who controls the owner."

The Betrayal Inside the Family

We escaped the warehouse before the roof collapsed.

Victor was waiting outside.

His wound had been bandaged.

He looked at Adrian.

"You."

Adrian smiled.

"Brother."

Victor raised his weapon.

Gabriel stepped between them.

"No."

Victor glared.

"Move."

"Not until he tells the truth."

Adrian laughed.

"How noble."

Victor's hands shook.

"You killed our father."

"No."

"You burned the ledger."

"No."

"You disappeared."

"Yes."

Victor looked confused.

"I disappeared because you sold me."

Silence.

Victor's face changed.

"What?"

Adrian looked at me.

"Ask your father."

I turned toward Gabriel.

"Did Victor betray Adrian?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Adrian spoke.

"Your father told the family I was dead."

Gabriel looked at me.

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because Adrian had become dangerous."

Adrian laughed.

"I became dangerous when I discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

"That Evelyn wasn't protecting you."

I looked toward Elena.

Adrian continued.

"She was preparing to sacrifice you."

Evelyn's Plan

The words landed like a blow.

"Why would she?"

"Because the trust needed a blood sacrifice."

I stared.

"What?"

Adrian opened the document.

"Read the final clause."

I did.

At the bottom was a paragraph I'd never seen.

In the event of succession conflict, the heir's death shall permanently transfer control to the appointed guardian.

I looked up.

"That's not inheritance."

"No."

Adrian's eyes were cold.

"It's a contingency."

"If I die..."

"The guardian gets everything."

"Who was the guardian?"

Adrian smiled.

"Your mother."

I looked at Elena.

She was crying.

"I didn't know."

"Did you know the clause existed?"

She hesitated.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"And you still raised me."

"Because I believed I could change it."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid."

I stepped back.

For the first time, I understood the true price of betrayal.

It wasn't always money.

Sometimes it was silence.

The Last Piece

Ewan suddenly appeared.

Two men followed him.

He was bruised but standing.

I ran toward him.

"Are you okay?"

He nodded.

"I escaped."

"From where?"

"The old residence."

"How?"

"Someone helped me."

"Who?"

Ewan looked at Adrian.

Then at Gabriel.

Then at Victor.

Finally, he looked at Elena.

"Her."

I froze.

"Mom?"

Ewan nodded.

"She gave me the access code."

Elena closed her eyes.

"I couldn't let them kill another son."

I looked at her.

"Why now?"

She whispered:

"Because I finally understood that protecting you through lies was killing you anyway."

Adrian shook his head.

"Too late."

He pulled out his phone.

A timer appeared.

00:08:42

I stared.

"What is that?"

"The trust transfer."

"To whom?"

Adrian looked at me.

"To you."

The timer continued.

"Then what's the problem?"

Adrian smiled.

"You're going to sign it."

"I won't."

"You will."

"Why?"

He turned his phone toward me.

A live video appeared.

Mara.

Julian.

Celeste's mother.

All three were being held in separate rooms.

I felt my blood freeze.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Sign the transfer."

"Or they die."

The Choice

Nobody spoke.

Snow fell around us.

The fire behind us slowly collapsed.

I looked at the screen.

Mara was crying.

Julian was asleep.

Then Celeste's voice came from somewhere off-camera.

"Don't do it."

I looked at her.

"Celeste."

"Don't."

Adrian smiled.

"You see?"

He pointed toward her.

"Even she knows."

I stared at the people I loved.

Then at the trust.

Then at Adrian.

"You made one mistake."

His expression changed.

"What?"

"You think the trust is what gives me power."

I stepped closer.

"It isn't."

He frowned.

I looked at Gabriel.

Then Victor.

Then Ewan.

Then Elena.

"We've spent twenty-seven years fighting over a piece of paper."

I tore the trust in half.

Adrian's face went white.

"No."

I tore it again.

And again.

The pieces fell into the snow.

He stared at them.

"You just destroyed everything."

I smiled.

"No."

I pulled a small drive from my pocket.

"I copied it."

His face changed.

Ewan smiled.

Victor understood.

"The digital trust."

I nodded.

"And every piece of evidence we've collected."

Adrian stepped backward.

"You wouldn't."

"I would."

I looked at him.

"And there's something else."

I held up my phone.

The entire conversation had been recorded.

Every confession.

Every name.

Every threat.

Every admission.

Adrian stared at me.

"You think that will save you?"

"No."

I looked toward the approaching police lights.

"It will save everyone else."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

Because this time...

the city wasn't coming for me.

It was coming for him.

The Last Betrayal

But before the police reached us, Adrian whispered:

"You still don't know who betrayed you last."

I stopped.

"What?"

He smiled.

Then looked behind me.

I turned.

Elena stood there.

She was holding a gun.

Pointed directly at me.

Ewan froze.

"Mom."

She was crying.

"I'm sorry."

My heart sank.

"Why?"

She shook her head.

"I promised I would protect you."

"Then put the gun down."

"I can't."

"Why?"

She looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

"He has Julian."

I stared.

"No."

"He'll kill him."

"Mom."

She raised the gun.

"I'm sorry."

A shot rang out.

I closed my eyes.

Then opened them.

Elena was on the ground.

The gun had fallen from her hand.

Behind her stood Victor.

He had fired.

But the bullet hadn't hit her.

He had shot the weapon away.

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

Victor lowered his gun.

"Because I'm done letting this family sacrifice its children."

Police cars surrounded the street.

Adrian tried to run.

Ewan tackled him.

The trust fragments scattered beneath their feet.

And as officers surrounded us, my phone vibrated.

One final message.

From an unknown number.

YOU SAVED THEM.

A second message appeared.

BUT YOU STILL HAVEN'T FOUND JULIAN.

I looked toward the dark city.

The child was missing.

Adrian was being arrested.

Nathaniel had disappeared.

Rebecca was gone.

And Celeste...

was nowhere to be found.

Then my phone rang.

I answered.

A man's voice whispered:

"Your wedding starts in six hours."

I knew the voice.

Nathaniel.

He laughed softly.

"And this time, Connor..."

A pause.

"...you won't be the groom."

The line went dead.

I looked at Ewan.

He was staring at me.

"What did he say?"

I swallowed.

"He has Julian."

May you like

And for the first time that night...

I was truly afraid.
