Chapter 2 – The War Begins

Chapter 2 – The War Begins

Three days.

That was all Harrison Cole needed.

Three days to turn a lifetime of deception into a battlefield.

Richard Harrington had spent two years carefully constructing his escape plan.

Harrison destroyed it in seventy-two hours.

The first thing Richard noticed was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The dangerous kind.

For six years, the Harrington mansion had been filled with the sounds of privilege.

House staff moving through marble hallways.

Executives arriving for private dinners.

Investors laughing over expensive wine.

Richard’s voice giving orders.

But now…

Nothing.

The house felt empty.

Because Khloe was gone.

And without Khloe, Richard finally realized something uncomfortable.

The mansion had never felt like home because of the walls.

It felt like home because she was inside it.

But that thought lasted only a few seconds.

Then anger replaced it.

Richard Harrington did not lose.

Not in business.

Not in negotiations.

Not in life.

People moved when he told them to move.

Banks approved his loans.

Investors followed his vision.

Politicians returned his calls.

He had spent twenty years building an empire.

And he refused to let one woman and one ruthless attorney destroy it.

Especially not his wife.

Especially not her brother.

The conference room on the forty-second floor of Harrington Commercial Group was filled before 8:00 a.m.

Executives sat around the massive glass table.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone had heard rumors.

Nobody knew the truth.

Richard entered wearing his usual navy suit, his expression perfectly controlled.

“Good morning.”

No one answered immediately.

That bothered him.

Small things bothered powerful men.

A delayed response.

A lowered gaze.

A lack of confidence.

They were signs.

And Richard noticed signs.

“Let’s begin.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Recent personal matters have created unnecessary distractions.”

A few executives exchanged looks.

Personal matters.

That was how rich people described disasters.

“However,” Richard continued, “the company remains strong.”

A senior financial officer cleared his throat.

“Mr. Harrington.”

Richard looked up.

“Yes?”

“There are questions regarding several offshore accounts.”

The room froze.

Richard’s expression didn’t change.

But inside, something shifted.

“Who asked those questions?”

The officer hesitated.

“That information came through legal channels.”

Richard leaned back.

“Whose legal channels?”

Nobody answered.

He already knew.

“Harrison Cole.”

The name landed like a weapon.

Across the city, Harrison sat in his office reviewing documents.

Stacks of them.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Corporate filings.

Communication logs.

Every piece of Richard Harrington’s carefully hidden life.

Khloe sat across from him, holding a cup of tea she hadn’t touched.

She looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I feel like I’m watching my entire marriage become a crime scene.”

Harrison looked up.

“That’s because it was.”

The bluntness surprised her.

“Harry…”

“I’m not saying that to hurt you.”

He softened slightly.

“I’m saying it because you need the truth.”

He turned the tablet toward her.

“Richard didn’t simply cheat.”

The screen showed financial documents.

“He prepared.”

Khloe looked down.

“He planned to leave me.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Harrison’s silence answered before his words did.

“Approximately eighteen months.”

Her face went pale.

Eighteen months.

While she was attending doctor appointments.

While she was grieving.

While she was fighting to carry their child.

He was preparing an exit.

“Why?”

Harrison studied her carefully.

“Because Richard believed you were an asset that stopped being useful.”

The sentence hurt.

Even though she knew it was true.

Even though she had seen the evidence.

It still hurt.

Harrison immediately regretted the wording.

“Khloe—”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“It’s okay.”

A small, broken smile appeared.

“I need to hear it.”

She placed her hand on her stomach.

“For years, I wondered why he changed.”

Her eyes filled.

“I thought maybe I became boring.”

Harrison’s expression hardened.

“Never say that again.”

She looked at him.

“You hear me?”

His voice became firm.

“You carried his children. You built his home. You protected his reputation.”

A pause.

“Richard Harrington did not get bored.”

Harrison looked back at the documents.

“He got greedy.”

At noon, Richard received the first attack.

Not from the media.

Not from prosecutors.

From his own bank.

His private banking representative called.

“Mr. Harrington, several accounts are under temporary review.”

Richard stood instantly.

“What?”

“Due to legal concerns regarding asset transfers.”

“Who authorized this?”

A pause.

Then:

“Harrison Cole’s office submitted documentation requesting preservation of marital assets.”

Richard’s hand tightened around the phone.

“He froze my accounts?”

“No, sir. Not exactly.”

The banker sounded uncomfortable.

“He made sure they could not be moved.”

Richard’s breathing slowed.

A dangerous calm settled over him.

Harrison wasn’t attacking.

He was preventing.

That was worse.

Because it meant Harrison knew exactly what Richard would do next.

Vanessa Kensington was furious.

Not scared.

Not yet.

Furious.

She paced across her luxury apartment overlooking Philadelphia.

“He cannot do this.”

Richard stood near the window.

“He already is.”

“He’s just a lawyer.”

Richard turned.

“Stop saying that.”

Something in his voice made her pause.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re afraid of him.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

She noticed.

“You are.”

Richard looked away.

That irritated her.

Because Vanessa Kensington had always believed she was chosen.

Special.

She wasn’t just some mistress.

She was the future Mrs. Harrington.

She had spent two years waiting.

Two years believing Richard would leave Khloe.

Two years imagining herself in the penthouse.

Hosting charity events.

Appearing in magazines.

Being admired.

And now one man had stepped in and threatened the entire dream.

“Harrison Cole doesn’t scare me.”

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa walked closer.

“What?”

“He doesn’t fight like normal people.”

Her confidence weakened slightly.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked at her.

“It means you don’t know what you started.”

That evening, Harrison received an unexpected visitor.

Richard Harrington.

No appointment.

No warning.

Just anger wearing an expensive suit.

The receptionist immediately stood.

“Mr. Harrington—”

“I’m here to see Harrison Cole.”

The entire office went silent.

Everyone knew that voice.

The voice of a man used to getting his way.

Minutes later, Richard entered Harrison’s office.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Harrison didn’t look up from the file he was reading.

“Enjoying what?”

“Destroying my life.”

Finally, Harrison lifted his eyes.

“No.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Then what?”

Harrison closed the file.

“I’m documenting it.”

The answer was so cold that Richard almost lost his composure.

“You think you’re untouchable?”

“No.”

Harrison leaned back.

“I know I’m prepared.”

Richard laughed.

“You’re protecting your sister. That’s all this is.”

Harrison studied him.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

“This isn’t about protecting Khloe anymore.”

Richard frowned.

“Then what is it?”

Harrison stood.

The difference between them became obvious.

Richard was taller.

Richer.

More famous.

But Harrison carried something money couldn’t buy.

Certainty.

“This is about consequences.”

The room became silent.

“You spent years believing nobody would challenge you.”

Harrison walked toward him.

“You were wrong.”

Richard stared at him.

“You think Khloe will thank you when this destroys everything?”

For the first time, Harrison’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because that was the one thing Richard understood correctly.

Khloe would suffer.

She would lose the life she imagined.

But Harrison knew something Richard didn’t.

Sometimes the life you lose is the one that was killing you.

“You know what your biggest mistake was?”

Richard said nothing.

“You thought my sister was weak because she loved you.”

Harrison opened the office door.

“She was strong enough to love you.”

A pause.

“But she’s about to become strong enough to survive you.”

That night, Richard Harrington stood in front of his bathroom mirror.

For the first time, he looked older.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

The confidence was gone.

Because the world had changed.

For years, he had controlled every conversation.

Every negotiation.

Every outcome.

But now there was someone who knew all his secrets.

Someone who had no interest in money.

No interest in approval.

No interest in compromise.

A man who had one mission.

Protect Khloe.

And destroy anyone who hurt her.

Richard picked up his phone.

He stared at Vanessa’s name.

Then at Harrison Cole’s name.

Two enemies.

One problem.

He needed a weapon.

Because if he could not defeat Harrison legally…

He would have to find another way.

And somewhere inside the darkest corner of his mind…

A dangerous idea began to form.

An idea that would change everything.

Two weeks later.

Khloe Harrington walked into her first courtroom battle.

She expected anger.

She expected humiliation.

She expected Richard to attack.

But she never expected the woman waiting inside.

Vanessa Kensington.

Standing beside Richard.

Smiling.

And holding a folder.

A folder that could change the entire case.

Khloe stopped.

Harrison noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

Khloe stared at Vanessa.

Her face drained of color.

“Harry…”

Her voice trembled.

“She has something.”

Harrison looked at Vanessa.

Then at the folder.

And for the first time in weeks…

He became interested.

Because Harrison Cole knew one thing.

People only brought surprises when they believed they had already won.

And that meant one possibility.

Richard Harrington was not fighting to survive.

May you like

He was preparing to strike.

The war had officially begun.
