Chapter 2 — Before Lunch, the Kingdom Cracked
The room froze.
"No."
It wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
For the first time since the wedding, someone in that house had spoken without asking permission.
Preston laughed once.
A short, disbelieving sound.
"You think you can say no to me?"
"I just did."
Eleanor slowly stood from her chair.
"You've been our daughter-in-law for one day, and already you're destroying this family."
Maya looked around the dining room.
"No."
"I've been your daughter-in-law for one day."
"You've been destroying people for decades."
Richard finally looked up.
"Maya... let's calm down."
She met his eyes.
"You watched your son hit me."
"You don't get to ask for calm now."
He lowered his head again.
Morgan rolled her eyes.
"Oh, please. It was just a slap."
Maya nodded.
"Thank you."
Morgan frowned.
"For what?"
"For saying that while my phone is recording."
Every face changed.
Preston instinctively reached toward her purse.
She stepped back.
"Don't."
He froze.
"I started recording the moment your mother began lecturing me."
"The slap."
"The threats."
"The excuses."
"I have all of it."
Silence.
Heavy.
Crushing.
Then Maya walked to the end of the dining table.
She placed both hands on the polished oak.
Preston frowned.
"What are you doing?"
She looked him straight in the eye.
"Ending breakfast."
With one powerful movement...
She flipped the entire table.
Coffee exploded across the walls.
China shattered across the hardwood.
Orange juice soaked Eleanor's designer clothes.
Morgan screamed.
Richard stumbled backward.
The family portrait hanging above the fireplace crashed onto the floor.
No one moved.
The kingdom they ruled with fear suddenly looked exactly what it was—
A mess.
Maya removed her wedding ring.
Less than twenty-four hours after exchanging vows.
She placed it on top of the overturned table.
"I won't wear a promise you already broke."
Preston's voice cracked.
"Maya... don't do this."
She smiled sadly.
"You already did."
Then her phone vibrated.
A single message.
David: Call me. Urgent.
Her father's attorney.
Perfect.
She pressed dial.
"Proceed."
"Immediately."
She ended the call after only three words.
Eleanor frowned.
"What was that?"
May you like
Maya looked toward the front door.
"The beginning."
