CHAPTER 3 — The Room Behind the Locked Door

CHAPTER 3 — The Room Behind the Locked Door
Alejandro didn’t shout.
That surprised even him.
He simply turned and walked back toward the hallway.
“Where are you going?” Jimena called after him, suddenly sharper.
He didn’t answer.
He passed the dining room.
The moldy bread still sat untouched.
He passed the staircase.
Music faded behind him.
Then he stopped in front of a door he had never paid attention to before.
A small service hallway.
A second door.
Locked from the outside.
His hand went to the handle.
It opened easily.
Too easily.
Inside was darkness.
Cold air.
And the faint sound of breathing.
He stepped in.
“Valeria?” he whispered.
A small voice answered immediately.
“Daddy?”
A light flicked on.
What he saw made his stomach drop.
A makeshift “storage room.”
Not a bedroom.
Not a nursery.
A converted utility space with thin blankets on the floor and no heating.
His daughters huddled together in the corner.
All four of them.
Eyes wide.
Valeria instinctively moved in front of her sisters.
“Daddy… we weren’t bad,” she said quickly. “Please don’t be angry.”
Alejandro couldn’t speak.
His throat closed.
Camila pointed toward the door hesitantly.
“Mom Jimena said this is where we stay when guests come,” she whispered. “So we don’t bother anyone.”
“Guests,” Alejandro repeated.
Regina nodded.
“She said we should be quiet because we’re not part of the party.”
Something inside him finally broke—but silently.
He knelt slowly.
“Who locked this door?” he asked.
No one answered immediately.
Then Sofía spoke, barely audible:
“Mommy.”

That was the moment Alejandro stopped being a man returning home…
and started becoming something else entirely.
