Chapter 9: The Enemy Inside

Chapter 9: The Enemy Inside
Sophia Hartwell had learned one painful lesson:
The most dangerous enemies were not always the people standing against you.
Sometimes, they were the people standing beside you.
The people who knew your weaknesses.
Your habits.
Your dreams.
The people who knew exactly where to strike.
After discovering Project Phoenix, Sophia stopped trusting easily.
Not because she wanted to become suspicious.
Because she had to.
Ethan had taught her that love could hide a weapon.
Richard Blackwood had taught her that kindness could hide a strategy.
Now she wondered:
Who else had been lying to her?
The Hartwell headquarters had changed.
Before the wedding, the building represented success.
After the scandal, it felt like a battlefield.
Security had increased.
Employees whispered in hallways.
Executives avoided conversations.
Everyone was afraid.
But Sophia was different.
She walked through the building with confidence.
Not because she was no longer hurt.
Because she refused to let fear control her.
Her assistant, Laura Mitchell, followed behind her.
“Sophia, the board meeting is in twenty minutes.”
Sophia nodded.
“Cancel it.”
Laura looked surprised.
“Cancel?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because we have a bigger problem.”
Sophia placed a folder on the desk.
Inside were documents showing unusual company activities.
Money transfers.
Private contracts.
Access records.
Laura looked through them.
“What is this?”
“Someone inside Hartwell has been leaking information.”
Laura became serious.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Sophia looked at her.
“Because only a few people had access to these files.”
A pause.
“And one of them is still working here.”
At the same time, Emma and Daniel were analyzing Michael’s old investigation.
They had spent hours reconstructing his final days.
Every message.
Every transaction.
Every person he contacted.
Daniel placed a map on the table.
“Your brother was not just investigating Blackwood International.”
Emma looked closer.
“What else?”
“He was tracking people connected to them.”
“Who?”
Daniel pointed at several names.
“Lawyers.”
“Executives.”
“Government officials.”
Emma frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael was an accountant.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
He looked at her.
“Someone helped him.”
Emma became silent.
Michael had always been careful.
But he was not alone.
Someone had given him information.
Someone who knew the truth.
“Who?”
Daniel pointed at one name.
Emma froze.
“No.”
“What?”
She stared at the paper.
“That person can’t be involved.”
“Why?”
“Because I know them.”
Meanwhile, Sophia sat in her father’s office.
Richard Hartwell looked exhausted.
“You think someone inside the company betrayed us?”
Sophia nodded.
“I know someone did.”
Her father looked at the documents.
“This is serious.”
“Yes.”
“Do you have a suspect?”
Sophia hesitated.
“There is one person.”
“Who?”
Before she could answer, the door opened.
A familiar voice said:
“Are you talking about me?”
Sophia turned.
Her heart stopped.
Thomas Hartwell.
Her uncle.
The man she had seen meeting Ethan.
The man whose name appeared in the investigation.
He entered calmly.
“You’ve been watching me.”
Sophia stood.
“Yes.”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“I expected better from you.”
Sophia felt anger.
“Better?”
“You accuse your own family before you have proof.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“I saw you meeting Ethan.”
Thomas looked at her.
“And you know why?”
“Tell me.”
Silence.
Then Thomas said:
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
Nobody spoke.
Sophia almost laughed.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
“By secretly meeting the man who poisoned me?”
Thomas sighed.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Thomas sat down.
For the first time, he looked older.
Tired.
Not like a powerful businessman.
Like someone carrying a burden.
“Ethan contacted me months ago.”
Sophia stared.
“Why?”
“He wanted information about Hartwell Enterprises.”
“And you gave it to him.”
Thomas looked away.
“Yes.”
The confession shocked her.
“Why?”
“Because I was trying to find out his plan.”
Sophia shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“I know.”
Thomas looked at her.
“That is why I never told anyone.”
Sophia felt betrayed.
“You let me walk toward him.”
“I was trying to stop it.”
“You failed.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
The answer hurt because it was true.
That evening, Emma arrived with Daniel.
Her expression was serious.
“Sophia.”
Sophia looked at her.
“What happened?”
Emma placed a file on the table.
“We found the person who helped Michael.”
Everyone looked at the document.
Sophia opened it.
Then froze.
The name on the page was:
Thomas Hartwell.
The room became silent.
Sophia looked at her uncle.
“No.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Because he knew this moment would come.
Emma stared.
“You worked with Michael.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
Sophia felt confused.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Because Michael asked me not to.”
“What?”
“He knew the Blackwoods were watching.”
Thomas’s voice became quiet.
“He knew if the wrong person discovered the investigation, everyone connected to him would be in danger.”
Sophia looked at Emma.
“Is this true?”
Emma checked the documents.
Slowly, she nodded.
“Yes.”
Thomas continued.
“Michael found something bigger than financial crimes.”
“Project Phoenix.”
Emma looked surprised.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Thomas looked down.
“Because I helped create part of it.”
The room went silent.
Sophia stepped backward.
“What?”
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Years ago, before I understood Richard’s intentions, I worked with him.”
“You worked with Richard Blackwood?”
“Yes.”
“I thought I was building something powerful.”
“But I realized too late what it really was.”
Sophia stared.
“So you were part of this.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
“And Michael discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“Then he died because of it.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I believe so.”
Sophia felt overwhelmed.
Her entire world was filled with secrets.
Her fiancé.
Her family.
Her company.
Everyone had hidden something.
Everyone had decided what she was allowed to know.
She looked at Emma.
“At least you were honest with me.”
Emma looked away.
Sophia noticed.
“Emma?”
Silence.
Then Emma spoke.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”
Sophia’s heart sank.
“What?”
Emma took a deep breath.
“Before the wedding…”
A pause.
“I met Ethan.”
Sophia froze.
“What?”
“I confronted him.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew he was planning something.”
Sophia stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Emma looked guilty.
“Because I needed proof.”
Sophia felt hurt.
“You let me walk into that wedding.”
“I thought I could stop him.”
“But you didn’t know if you could.”
Emma lowered her eyes.
“No.”
The silence between them was painful.
Because even Emma had hidden something.
Later that night, Sophia stood alone in the garden.
The betrayal felt endless.
She thought she had escaped the Blackwoods.
But the truth was:
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had their own version of the story.
Emma approached slowly.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophia looked at her.
“I know why you did it.”
“But?”
Sophia looked away.
“But I need time to trust again.”
Emma nodded.
“I understand.”
For the first time, Sophia saw Emma not as a hero.
Not as a savior.
But as a human being.
A person who had been afraid.
A person who had made mistakes.
Across the city, Ethan watched the situation unfold.
A report appeared on his screen.
Thomas Hartwell identified as connected to Project Phoenix.
He smiled.
“Perfect.”
The man beside him looked confused.
“You wanted Thomas exposed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ethan looked at the screen showing Sophia standing alone.
“Because trust is the strongest weapon.”
A pause.
“And once it breaks…”
“It doesn’t matter who is innocent.”
The next morning, Sophia received a message.
A video file.
No sender.
She opened it.
The video showed Michael Carter.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
Speaking directly to the camera.
Emma screamed.
Because she recognized him instantly.
“Michael…”
The recording began.
“If you are watching this, it means I failed.”
Emma covered her mouth.
Sophia stared.
The dead man was speaking.
And his next words changed everything.
“The person who killed me is not Ethan Blackwood.”
A pause.
“It is someone you all trust.”
The video stopped.
Sophia, Emma, and Isabella stared at the screen.
Because the enemy they were searching for…
Might not be outside their circle.
May you like
It might have been inside all along.
