Chapter 5: The Truth That Remained

Chapter 5: The Truth That Remained

A year later...

The nursery looked different.

Bright colors.

Laughter.

Medicine bottles safely locked away.

Leo raced toy cars across the floor while Ethan watched from the doorway.

A reporter once asked Ethan,

"Why did you trust someone the entire town believed was a thief?"

He smiled.

"Because I read the court records instead of the gossip."

Then he looked toward Mara.

"The people with the worst reputations are sometimes the ones who threatened the wrong criminals."

Mara quietly laughed.

"You make me sound heroic."

"You are."

Leo ran over and wrapped both arms around her.

"She's my hero."

Mara kissed the top of his head.

"No."

"Your father is."

Leo looked confused.

"He believed the truth before everyone else did."

Ethan shook his head.

"I believed there was more to the story."

"And you gave us the proof."

Outside, the old rumors about Mara slowly faded.

Inside the house, one truth never did.

The most dangerous people are not always strangers invited into your home.

Sometimes...

May you like

They are the ones who have been sitting at your family table all along.

The End.
