CHAPTER 3: The Woman They Never Saw

CHAPTER 3: The Woman They Never Saw
The dining room doors opened.
Three people entered.
A gray-haired attorney.
A corporate compliance officer.
Two uniformed security officers followed behind them.
Every executive stood.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
Brendan said in confusion.
"Our general counsel?"
The attorney didn't even acknowledge him.
Instead, he walked directly toward me.
Then...
To the horror of everyone in the room...
He bowed his head respectfully.
"Good evening, Ms. Carter."
"The board is assembled."
"Protocol Seven has been successfully initiated."
The room froze.
Jessica blinked.
Diane looked from him to me.
Then back again.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"There is none," Mr. Whitmore replied calmly.
He removed a leather folder.
"Under the Harrison Global Trust established by the late Arthur Harrison, fifty-one percent of all voting shares are held by a single beneficiary."
He turned toward me.
"The beneficiary is Emily Carter."
Gasps erupted across the room.
Brendan actually laughed.
"No."
"No... that's impossible."
Whitmore opened the folder.
Inside were notarized trust documents.
Corporate seals.
Court certifications.
Every signature legally verified.
"This trust became effective five years ago upon Mr. Harrison's retirement."
"The ownership has remained confidential by the founder's instruction."
Diane staggered backward.
"My husband never told me."
"He wasn't permitted to."
"You expect me to believe..."
She pointed at me.
"...that she owns this company?"
Whitmore answered without emotion.
"Not owns."
"Controls."
"The distinction is important."
Silence.
Complete silence.
I slowly stood.
May you like
Water still dripped from my dress onto the polished hardwood floor.
No one laughed now.
