Chapter 1: The Salute That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Salute That Changed Everything

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Admiral Jonathan Reed held his salute without hesitation.

Every officer in dress uniform immediately followed.

One after another...

Hands rose.

Two dozen military officers saluted the woman standing silently in the center of the room.

Celeste Ashford.

The daughter the Ashford family had erased from their history.

Her sister, Victoria, slowly stepped backward.

The torn fabric of Celeste's blouse still hung from her shoulders, exposing the network of thick burn scars that stretched across her back.

Only moments earlier, Victoria had laughed.

Now...

She couldn't even lift her eyes.

Admiral Reed lowered his hand.

"I've attended state funerals."

"I've honored decorated heroes."

"But I have never saluted anyone more deserving than Commander Celeste Ashford."

A whisper spread through the ballroom.

Commander?

Her father, Arthur Ashford, finally found his voice.

"This... this is ridiculous."

"You don't know who she is."

The Admiral looked directly at him.

"No."

May you like

"I know exactly who she is."

"You never did."
