Chapter 3 – The Bracelet's Secret

Chapter 3 – The Bracelet's Secret

Detectives searched Claire's office before she could leave the estate.

Hidden inside a locked desk drawer was a velvet pouch.

Inside it...

Lay the missing sapphire bracelet.

Victoria covered her mouth.

"My mother's bracelet..."

Claire lowered her head.

"I never meant for it to go this far."

Detective Bennett asked quietly,

"Then why frame Emily?"

Claire's voice shook.

"I had been stealing small amounts of money from the household accounts for months."

"Emily noticed mistakes in the records."

"I was afraid she would report them."

"So I needed everyone to believe she couldn't be trusted."

The detective nodded.

"So you planted the jewelry box."

Claire whispered,

"Yes."

Victoria slowly walked toward Emily.

For several painful minutes, she could not find the right words.

Finally she said,

"I accused the wrong person."

Emily looked down.

"The hardest part wasn't being accused."

"It was realizing how quickly years of trust disappeared."

The room fell silent.
