CHAPTER 6

THEY ERASED THEIR DAUGHTER â THEN THE ADMIRAL SALUTED HER
CHAPTER 6
The Brother Who Chose Money
People always assumed betrayal came from enemies.
They were wrong.
Enemies were easy.
You expected them to hurt you.
You expected them to lie.
You expected them to choose themselves.
But family?
Family was different.
Family was supposed to be the place where you were safe.
The place where you could remove your armor.
The place where you didn't have to fight.
My mistake was believing the Ashfords were my family before they were an empire.
Daniel taught me that lesson.
When we were children, Daniel was the one person I thought would protect me.
Before money.
Before inheritance.
Before our father's expectations.
He was just my older brother.
The person who taught me how to ride a bicycle.
The person who stayed awake with me during thunderstorms.
The person who promised me something when I was twelve years old.
"No matter what happens, Elena, I'll always be on your side."
I remembered those words.
I wondered if he did.
I found Daniel where I expected him to be.
The Ashford Tower.
The place where everything began.
The place where my family built an empire and buried their conscience.
He was standing alone in the executive conference room, looking out over the city.
The same view my father had enjoyed for decades.
The view of everything they owned.
Or thought they owned.
Daniel didn't turn when I entered.
"You shouldn't be here."
I almost smiled.
It was the same sentence my father used.
The Ashfords truly lacked imagination.
"I've heard that before."
He finally looked at me.
For the first time, I noticed something different.
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had been carrying a weight for too long.
"You released the documents."
"Yes."
"Do you know what you've done?"
I walked toward the table.
"I exposed the truth."
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"You attacked the company."
"The company attacked innocent people."
His expression changed.
"Don't pretend this is about justice."
I stopped.
"What is it about then?"
Silence.
Daniel looked away.
"Revenge."
There it was.
The accusation everyone expected.
The story my father would tell.
The story that made them victims and me the villain.
I laughed quietly.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"You still believe you get to decide why I do things."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You always thought you were better than us."
"No."
I looked at him.
"I thought you were better than this."
That hurt.
I saw it.
For one second, the confident heir disappeared.
And I saw my brother.
The boy who once promised to protect me.
"Tell me the truth, Daniel."
He said nothing.
"Did you know about the operation?"
His silence answered.
I felt something inside me break.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
"You knew."
He closed his eyes.
"Elena..."
"No."
My voice was quiet.
"Don't say my name like you still care."
He looked at me.
"I didn't know everything."
"How convenient."
"I swear."
He stepped closer.
"I didn't know they were going to use the ship."
"But you knew something."
Another silence.
Then:
"Yes."
The word was barely audible.
But it destroyed everything.
I remembered the night before my mission.
Daniel had called me.
I was surprised because we hadn't spoken much in months.
He asked where I was going.
I told him.
The South China Sea.
He became quiet.
At the time, I thought he was worried.
Now I understood.
He wasn't worried.
He knew.
"Why didn't you warn me?"
Daniel looked down.
"I couldn't."
"You couldn't?"
I stared at him.
"You couldn't warn your own sister?"
His voice cracked.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
He walked away.
Because people always walked away when the truth became uncomfortable.
"My father had everything."
I frowned.
"What?"
"The company. The power. The connections."
He laughed bitterly.
"Do you know what it's like growing up as an Ashford?"
I stared at him.
"Do you know what it's like knowing your entire life is already planned?"
I said nothing.
Daniel continued.
"Every decision was made for me."
"Every friendship."
"Every relationship."
"Every future."
He looked at me.
"You think you were the only one trapped?"
For a moment...
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered my scars.
"I was trapped too."
My voice became colder.
"But I didn't help him destroy you."
Daniel walked toward the window.
"When you found those documents, I knew this would happen."
"What?"
"Everything would collapse."
"Good."
He looked back.
"You don't mean that."
I stared at him.
"Yes, I do."
His eyes widened slightly.
"You would destroy everything?"
"No."
I shook my head.
"I would destroy what should never have existed."
Daniel reached into his jacket.
For a moment, my body reacted.
Years of military training.
Threat assessment.
Preparation.
But he pulled out something else.
A small black folder.
"I kept this."
I didn't move.
"What is it?"
"Insurance."
Against who?
I already knew.
"Against Father."
He placed it on the table.
"I knew one day he would go too far."
I stared at the folder.
"Why keep it?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Because even when I chose money..."
He paused.
"I knew he was wrong."
Inside the folder were copies of financial records.
But these were different.
Personal accounts.
Hidden transfers.
Payments made to silence witnesses.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Victoria.
My sister.
I looked at Daniel.
"What is this?"
His face became serious.
"Something you need to understand."
"Father never planned for us to inherit the company."
I frowned.
"What?"
"He created the Ashford Foundation Trust."
I looked through the papers.
"The trust controls everything after his death."
Daniel nodded.
"And the beneficiary?"
I already knew.
But I asked anyway.
"Who?"
He looked at me.
"Richard Ashford."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"That makes no sense."
"It does."
Daniel's voice lowered.
"Father built the empire for himself."
"He doesn't trust anyone."
"Not me."
"Not Victoria."
"Not even you."
The door suddenly opened.
We both turned.
Victoria stood there.
Her face was pale.
She had heard everything.
"You're lying."
Daniel looked at her.
"I'm not."
She stepped inside.
"You said I would inherit everything."
Daniel laughed softly.
"There."
His expression was painful.
"The truth."
Victoria looked between us.
"What are you saying?"
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I didn't see my cruel sister.
I saw someone realizing she had spent her entire life chasing a prize that was never hers.
"Father never loved us," I said.
Victoria's eyes filled with anger.
"Don't say that."
"Why?"
"Because it's not true."
Her voice became desperate.
"He always protected us."
Daniel looked at her.
"No."
Silence.
"He protected the company."
That evening, Richard Ashford called a private family meeting.
All of us were there.
For the first time in years.
The four Ashford children and their father.
Except we weren't children anymore.
And we weren't united.
Richard stood at the head of the table.
"I know what happened today."
Nobody spoke.
He looked at Daniel.
"You betrayed me."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"No."
A pause.
"I finally stopped betraying myself."
My father smiled.
A dangerous smile.
"I see."
Then he looked at me.
"You turned my children against me."
I shook my head.
"No."
I placed the folder on the table.
"You did that."
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Richard looked at Daniel.
"You really think she cares about you?"
Daniel said nothing.
Richard continued.
"She will destroy you too."
I watched Daniel.
Waiting.
Because this was the moment.
The moment where people revealed who they truly were.
Daniel looked at our father.
Then at me.
And finally said:
"Maybe."
A pause.
"But at least she never pretended love was something you could buy."
The room went silent.
Because Daniel had finally chosen.
Not money.
Not power.
Not the Ashford name.
The truth.
Later that night, my phone received a message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
"Congratulations. You found the traitor."
A second message appeared.
"But you haven't found the person who ordered the betrayal."
My blood ran cold.
Because the message was signed.
R.A.
Richard Ashford.
My father.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
"Ask your brother what happened to your mother."
I froze.
My mother.
A name nobody mentioned.
A person who disappeared from our family story years ago.
A person I thought was gone.
But now I understood.
The Ashfords didn't just have one secret.
They had an entire graveyard.
And somewhere inside it...
May you like
Was the truth about my mother.
