CHAPTER 11 — The Truth About Ethan Prescott

CHAPTER 11 — The Truth About Ethan Prescott

People often believe the worst person in a story is the person who causes the most damage.

The person who gives the orders.

The person who makes the threats.

The person standing at the center of the storm.

But sometimes...

the most painful betrayal comes from the person who stood beside you and did nothing.

Ethan Prescott was not the mastermind.

He was not the architect of the Prescott family's empire.

He was not the man who created the plan.

But he was the man who had a choice.

And he chose silence.

For Emily...

that was the betrayal she struggled to forgive.

THE MAN WHO WANTED TO BE FORGIVEN

Ethan came to my office three days after the Prescott collapse.

Not with lawyers.

Not with excuses.

Just himself.

Daniel stood near the door.

"I don't like this."

I looked at him.

"Neither do I."

But Emily had requested that I hear him.

And I respected her choice.

Ethan sat across from me.

For the first time, he looked exactly like what he was.

A man who had lost everything.

Not his money.

Not his family's influence.

Something more important.

The illusion that he was a good person.

"I know you hate me."

I remained silent.

"You should."

That surprised me.

Most guilty people spend their lives trying to explain why they are innocent.

Ethan did not.

"I hurt her."

His voice lowered.

"Not with my hands."

A pause.

"But I hurt her."

THE SON WHO NEVER STOOD UP

Ethan told us everything.

The first time he met Emily.

The first conversation with his family.

The moment he realized the marriage was not what he thought.

At first, he claimed he did not know.

But eventually...

he admitted the truth.

He knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

"After we got married, I found the documents."

I stared at him.

"You knew?"

He looked down.

"Yes."

The room became cold.

Emily had been sitting nearby.

She looked at him.

Not angry.

Just disappointed.

"How long?"

Ethan swallowed.

"Almost two years."

Two years.

Two years of knowing she was being manipulated.

Two years of watching her lose herself.

Two years of choosing comfort over courage.

THE EXCUSE THAT WAS NEVER ENOUGH

"I was scared."

Ethan whispered.

That sentence angered me more than anything.

Not because fear was impossible.

Fear was human.

But fear did not excuse allowing someone else to suffer.

"You were scared."

I repeated.

Ethan nodded.

"My family controlled everything."

I looked at him.

"No."

He looked up.

"They controlled what you were willing to lose."

Silence.

"That is different."

THE SECRET EMILY NEVER KNEW

Then Ethan revealed something even more painful.

The night Emily was hospitalized...

the night she finally escaped...

it was not an accident.

She had been planning to leave for weeks.

She had collected evidence.

She had contacted a lawyer.

She was preparing to walk away.

But someone found out.

Margaret.

"She knew Emily was leaving."

Ethan said.

"She told me to stop her."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"She told me if you left, the family would collapse."

"She said I had to convince you to stay."

Emily's voice shook.

"And you did."

Ethan looked destroyed.

"Yes."

THE FINAL BETRAYAL

Ethan had not locked Emily away.

He had not threatened her.

He had not physically hurt her.

But he had done something that broke her heart.

He convinced her to trust someone who was hurting her.

Because admitting the truth would destroy his world.

"I told myself I was protecting you."

Ethan whispered.

Emily looked at him.

"You were protecting yourself."

He could not deny it.

Because she was right.

THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED BLAMING HERSELF

After Ethan left, Emily stayed quiet for a long time.

Then she spoke.

"I keep wondering why I didn't see it."

I sat beside her.

"Because you weren't looking for a reason to distrust the person you loved."

She looked at me.

"Is that weakness?"

"No."

A pause.

"That is what makes betrayal hurt."

"You trusted them because you were capable of love."

ETHAN'S LAST GIFT

Before leaving the city, Ethan sent one final package.

Inside was a journal.

Margaret Prescott's private journal.

Pages of thoughts.

Plans.

Confessions.

And one entry changed everything.

"Ethan is weak, but useful. Emily is emotional, but valuable. Victoria Hart is the only real threat."

Emily read the words.

Her hands tightened.

"She never saw me as a person."

I looked at the page.

"No."

"She saw everyone as a tool."

THE LAST THING ETHAN SAID

Before Ethan disappeared from our lives, he sent Emily a message.

Not an apology.

Not an excuse.

Something simpler.

"You deserved someone who would choose you before choosing himself."

Emily read it.

Then she put the phone down.

"Do you forgive him?"

I asked.

She thought for a long time.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"But I forgive myself for loving him."

Those words mattered.

Because healing does not always begin with forgiving the person who hurt you.

Sometimes it begins with forgiving yourself for believing they were different.

THE FINAL MESSAGE

That night, Daniel arrived with new information.

Victor Hale had moved.

Again.

But this time, he left something behind.

A message.

Not for me.

For Emily.

The paper contained only one sentence.

"Ask your mother why she never told you the truth about your father."

Emily looked at me.

Confusion crossed her face.

"My father?"

I felt something I had not felt in years.

Fear.

Because there was a chapter of my life I had never wanted Emily to know.

A chapter connected to Victor Hale.

A chapter connected to the reason he wanted revenge.

I had spent my entire career protecting my daughter from danger.

But now I realized something.

The biggest secret was not what the Prescott family had done.

It was what I had hidden.

And soon...

May you like

Emily would learn the truth about her own family.
