Chapter 2 — Sunrise Without an Empire

Chapter 2 — Sunrise Without an Empire
The black SUV disappeared into the night, leaving the Whitmore mansion glowing behind it like a palace built on illusion.
Inside, Andrew poured himself a glass of eighteen-year-old Scotch.
Brenda wrapped her arms around his waist.
"She'll come back," she said with a satisfied smile. "Women like Mariana always do."
Margaret nodded as she placed the empty jewelry box on the grand piano.
"She has nowhere else to go."
Andrew laughed.
"By tomorrow she'll be begging outside the gate."
None of them noticed that, at that exact moment, their financial world was already collapsing.
Forty minutes later, Mariana arrived at Escalante Global Headquarters.
The top floor was brightly lit despite the late hour.
The elevator doors opened onto a private boardroom where twelve executives were already waiting.
At the head of the table stood Eduardo Escalante.
Her father.
Founder of Escalante Capital, one of the largest private investment firms in North America.
The moment he saw the bruise on Mariana's face, silence settled over the room.
Eduardo walked toward his daughter.
He gently touched the mark on her cheek.
"Did Andrew do this?"
Mariana nodded.
"Twice."
The room became deathly quiet.
Eduardo slowly turned toward the legal team.
"Proceed."
The chief attorney opened a thick binder.
"Emergency ownership clauses have been activated."
"The Whitmore Group's revolving credit facilities have been suspended."
"All personal guarantees signed by Mrs. Mariana Escalante have been revoked."
"The trust funding their expansion projects has been frozen."
Another executive added,
"The banks have already been notified."
"They'll begin recalling outstanding loans at market opening."
Eduardo looked at his daughter.
"You spent four years protecting that family."
Mariana took a slow breath.
"I know."
"And tonight?"
She met his eyes.
"Tonight, I stop saving them."
At 6:15 the next morning, Andrew's phone rang.
He ignored it.
Then another call.
And another.
By the time he answered, the caller ID showed his Chief Financial Officer.
"Andrew," the man said, barely able to breathe, "we have a crisis."
Andrew frowned.
"What now?"
"Our operating accounts have been frozen."
"Our lenders suspended every credit line."
"The payroll transfer failed."
Andrew sat upright.
"Impossible."
"We have hundreds of millions in liquidity."
"No," the CFO whispered.
"We only appeared to."
"The capital backing every loan belonged to Escalante Capital."
Andrew's blood ran cold.
"What?"
"The guarantees were signed by Mariana."
"When she revoked them..."
"...everything disappeared."

For the first time in years...
Andrew felt genuine fear.
