Chapter 1: The Arrival of Obsidian

Chapter 1: The Arrival of Obsidian
The silence lasted only twenty-three seconds.
To Elena, it felt like an eternity.
Still curled on the marble floor, she pressed one trembling hand against her stomach.
"Please..."
She wasn't praying for herself.
She was praying for the tiny heartbeat inside her.
Across the kitchen, Evan stared at the phone still resting against Elena's cheek.
His confidence faded.
"What security network?" he demanded.
Elena didn't answer.
The calm voice on the line did.
"Ms. Sterling, thermal surveillance confirms three occupants inside the residence. Two executive protection teams are sixty seconds away. Medical helicopter inbound. Please remain where you are."
Evan lunged forward.
"Give me that phone!"
Before he could reach her—
every light inside the mansion flickered.
Then the front gate alarm sounded.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A signal Elena hadn't heard since she was sixteen.
Protocol Obsidian.
Outside, black SUVs swept through the private driveway without slowing.
The reinforced entrance gate—one Evan believed only he controlled—opened automatically.
His face turned pale.
"How are they getting in?"
Elena finally looked at him.
"Because this house..."
"...was never yours."
The words hit harder than any weapon.
For years Evan had introduced the Aspen estate as the symbol of everything he had built.
Magazine interviews.
Business podcasts.
Luxury home tours.
Every article praised his "self-made empire."
Only a handful of people knew the truth.
The estate belonged to the Sterling Family Trust.
It had always belonged to them.
When Elena married Evan, she had quietly allowed him to believe he was becoming the head of the household.
She never corrected the reporters.
Never mentioned that her grandfather had purchased the property decades earlier.
She wanted a husband.
Not someone attracted by money.
Now she understood the cost of that silence.
The sound of boots echoed through the entrance hall.
Fast.
Disciplined.
Professional.
The kitchen doors burst open.
Six men and two women in black tactical uniforms entered in perfect formation.
No raised voices.
No confusion.
Just precision.
The leader immediately knelt beside Elena.
"Ms. Sterling."
His eyes scanned her injuries.
"Pulse elevated."
"Possible abdominal trauma."
He touched his earpiece.
"Medical Team Alpha, move."
Two trauma physicians rushed in behind him carrying advanced emergency equipment.
One checked Elena's blood pressure.
The other searched for the baby's heartbeat.
Seconds stretched endlessly.
Then—
a faint rhythmic sound filled the room.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Weak.
But alive.
Tears streamed down Elena's face.
"My son..."
The physician smiled gently.
"He's fighting."
"So are you."
Across the kitchen, another security officer stepped between Evan and Celeste.
"Hands where we can see them."
Evan forced a laugh.
"This is ridiculous."
"I'm her husband."
The officer didn't blink.
"Our records indicate you're the primary suspect in an attempted homicide."
Celeste gasped.
"That's insane!"
Another officer calmly produced a tablet.
"Audio transmission from the emergency call."
Within seconds the room replayed Evan's own voice.
"Lose the baby...
...and I'll finally be free to marry her."
Every word echoed through the silent kitchen.
Neither of them spoke.
They couldn't.
Outside, distant sirens finally reached the estate.
Not because Evan had called for help.
Because someone else already had.
And they had come prepared.
As Elena was lifted onto a stretcher, she looked directly into Evan's eyes.
For the first time in ten years...
he looked afraid.
Not of prison.
May you like
Not of scandal.
But of discovering who his wife had really been all along.
