Chapter 3 – The Boy Who Was Never Supposed to Know

Chapter 3 – The Boy Who Was Never Supposed to Know
Ethan Sterling had spent his entire life believing he knew exactly who he was.
A Sterling.
The only son of Eleanor Sterling.
The heir to one of Chicago's most powerful families.
A man born into privilege, raised among wealth, and trained from childhood to carry a name that opened doors before he even touched them.
But in one night...
Everything became a question.
Who was his mother?
Who was his father?
Why had Eleanor lied?
And why had someone just threatened him for searching for answers?
The most terrifying part was not discovering that his life might have been built on a lie.
The terrifying part was realizing everyone around him might have known.
Including the people he trusted most.
Sterling Manor — The Next Morning
The breakfast room looked exactly the same.
Silver utensils.
Crystal glasses.
Fresh flowers imported from Europe.
A table large enough to separate people who were supposed to love each other.
Ethan sat across from Eleanor.
Neither of them touched their food.
"You went to see Claire."
It wasn't a question.
Eleanor already knew.
Ethan looked up.
"How?"
"You underestimate how much I know."
A bitter smile appeared on his face.
"That has always been your favorite answer."
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"She is dangerous."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"She is someone who spent twenty-five years running from you."
The words hit harder than he expected.
Because Eleanor had no immediate response.
"What did she tell you?"
Ethan watched her carefully.
"That my mother was murdered."
The room froze.
For the first time in Ethan's memory...
Eleanor looked genuinely shocked.
"She should never have told you that."
Ethan felt his heart sink.
Not because of the words.
Because of what they meant.
"You didn't deny it."
Silence.
"Mom."
Eleanor looked at him.
"Did you know?"
A long pause.
Then:
"I knew there were things you weren't ready to understand."
Ethan stood.
"No."
His voice shook.
"You decided what I was allowed to know."
"Ethan—"
"You didn't protect me."
He stared at her.
"You controlled me."
The argument ended when Eleanor said the one sentence Ethan never expected.
"Your mother was not the only person who died that night."
He stopped.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor looked away.
"Ask Claire."
Claire's Apartment
Claire knew Ethan would return.
She had seen that expression before.
The expression of someone whose entire world had shifted.
When he knocked, she opened the door immediately.
"You know."
Ethan said.
Claire stepped aside.
"Come in."
He entered holding an old file.
"Why did Eleanor tell me to ask you?"
Claire became still.
"Because she knows I was there."
Ethan stared.
"Where?"
Claire sat down slowly.
"The night your mother died."
Twenty-five years earlier...
Claire Whitmore was twenty-two.
She worked as Eleanor's assistant.
She believed Eleanor was brilliant.
Ambitious.
Powerful.
She thought working for her was the greatest opportunity of her life.
Until she discovered the truth.
Eleanor wasn't just managing the Sterling empire.
She was hiding problems.
Huge problems.
Financial crimes.
Illegal agreements.
People who disappeared after getting too close.
Claire found documents hidden inside Eleanor's office.
Documents connecting Sterling money to dangerous people.
She was terrified.
But before she could leave...
She found something else.
A baby.
Ethan.
"He was only six months old."
Claire whispered.
Ethan stared.
"You knew me?"
Claire nodded.
"I held you."
The words affected him more than he expected.
"You were crying."
"Your mother had just discovered what Eleanor was doing."
"She wanted to expose everything."
Ethan swallowed.
"And Eleanor stopped her."
Claire didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
"Why didn't you go to the police?"
Ethan asked.
Claire looked at him.
"I tried."
A pause.
"They didn't believe me."
"Why?"
Claire smiled sadly.
"Because Eleanor Sterling had already made sure nobody would."
Ethan looked at the file in his hand.
"What's inside?"
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
Claire looked directly at him.
"That you were never supposed to survive."
The sentence destroyed the air between them.
"What?"
Claire opened the file.
Inside were old medical records.
Hospital documents.
Legal papers.
Ethan's name appeared everywhere.
But another name appeared beside it.
Amelia Sterling.
His birth mother.
Claire pointed at one document.
"This was the original custody report."
Ethan read.
His hands became cold.
The report stated:
Child protection requested due to suspected family interference.
"Family interference?"
Claire nodded.
"Someone tried to remove you from your mother's care."
"Who?"
Claire looked away.
"Eleanor."
Ethan left Claire's apartment hours later.
But he didn't return to Sterling Manor.
Instead, he drove to the old family cemetery.
A place he had avoided his entire life.
He found Amelia Sterling's grave.
A name he had never known.
A woman he had never been allowed to remember.
He stood there for a long time.
"I'm sorry."
The words came out quietly.
"I didn't know you existed."
Then he noticed something.
A fresh flower placed on the grave.
Recently.
Someone else came here.
Behind the flower was a small note.
You are finally asking the right questions.
Ethan turned.
Nobody was there.
But whoever left the message knew him.
Knew where he would go.
Knew what he was searching for.
His phone rang.
Claire.
He answered immediately.
"Ethan."
Her voice was shaking.
"What happened?"
"Someone broke into my apartment."
His entire body went cold.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
A pause.
"But they didn't steal anything."
Ethan frowned.
"Then what did they take?"
Claire's voice dropped.
"They left something."
"What?"
A photograph.
"The same photograph from twenty-five years ago."
Ethan looked at Amelia's grave.
"What's different?"
Claire whispered:
"This time..."
"They added another person."
"Who?"
Silence.
Then Claire answered:
"Your father."
Ethan froze.
Because his entire life...
He had believed he never had a father.
But someone had just revealed that the missing piece of his past...
Was still alive.
May you like
And that person might be the only one who knew why Ethan Sterling was never supposed to know the truth.
